I am pretty new to shore fishing.
I was wonder what is the best type of lure for pollack fishing. I went to a mark a couple of days ago and tried spinning sand eels, lures and a few other bits i had in my bag..... nothing!!!!!
As i was about to go three lads turned up and fished around me with pirks and were catching pollack left right and centre!!!
Any words of wisdom form the forum members would be gratefully received

be sure to let the lure - sink as much as possible - be prepared to lose gear - put weight on it to make sure it goes down
if the water is deep enough - jig your lures -rather than casting far - theyre at your feet
use the rubber shads and fishes - they are the best this time of year on
good luck

Ady,
Any of the usual lures will work for pollack; spinners, jellyworms, shads, feathers, even deep diving plugs. Fly fishing is another option...
For the better fish weighted shads like those from storm and jellyworms fished on a lead head are often the way to go, there's so many types and sizes out there it's difficult to name particular brands/lures. These types of lures tend to snag less than spinners etc. Basically pollack are a top predator and will attack any small fish imitation.
Pollack by nature are a deep water species and stay well down in the kelp on shallower inshore rock marks during the day. Fishing late in the evening right into dark see the fish rise up through the water table as light levels drop. During daylight drop your lures as deep as you dare, they have to be fishing right in the weed to find the fish. I bet that is one reason why those others guys caught fish that evening and you didn't. If they were using heavier lures like pirks etc. then they were probably fishing much deeper - where the pollack were.
Pollack also wise up to lures very quickly, I have seen this time and time again so if the area you fish is fished fairly regularly by others then you can be sure the pollack have copped on. Changing lures/types/colours/sizes is often a very good way of getting a fish to strike. Try and find something they aren't used to seeing - that or get your walking boots on and find a brand new mark. Virgin rock marks when found seem to be stuffed full of fish for the first few trips for this very reason.
If all is else fails with pollack keep it deep and be prepared to loose a few lures here and there as a result.
Hope this helps,
Liam
