In the Keys I have used the penn spinfishers, and they work great for most species up to 100lb or so. and are adequate for blackfin, albacore, and bonito up to 20-25lbs, any bigger and you are in for a world of hurt.
The problem is that if you tie a tuna tail to tail with any other species of fish of the same weight, the tuna will tow that fish all over the ocean.
I assume if you are lookin for a fixed spool reel for plugging for tuna, you will be catching dog tooth (on jigs more like) and giant trevalley on poppers.
You are looking at a reel which can hold 300yds of 80lb braid, and that has a drag of 20-30lbs, and unfortunately you only have 2 choices the stella and the saltiga. (or perhaps van staal which cost even more) I have been doing a lot of research on this subject over the last year for a trip to the andaman islands, and anything else will just disintegrate.
Here are some links that may help you Paddy.

Yeah...dave are correct....spinfisher is affordable and tuff as a tank, the only affordable i think. The draw back of spinfisher is only the spool wch is not as good design as the other new reel for casting.I have a fren that had his spinfisher drag knob melt and jump out with the spool after a blistering run of a dogtooth.

Hi joe, yes its been a while since i bumped into you, hope allis well with you,i hope to be out there this sat for a few chucks. I have been considering Fin-Nor reels both the Ahab and OF series, stellas, and would love a van stall VS if i can get my mate to part with his,, i will check out the saltigas as ive not yet seen them yet. I want a good solid reel thats dependable but wont break the bank completly i will even go 2nd hand if good quality. Mainly i will be after yellow fin, trevalley, giant trevalley, barracuda, queen fish, etc but theres also a chance of tarpon but god knows what else is out there, in the past ive hooked up with some very big fish, smashing 50lb braid in the blink of an eye  and other fish ive hooked ive not even got to see them as they just keep swimming as if they dont even know there hooked untill they smash me.
This year im going to fish mono as i just dont like using braid when spinning around rocky marks,(any recomendations would be great??) and will be casting big poppers up to 4.1/2oz from the shore and other floating lures as i love to see the pure voilence of the take on the top also they seem to get a better stamp of fish responding to the bigger plugs. cheers for your sugestions lads

Hi paddy....theres a few review that u might want to read before buying this kind of reel....all i can say is most of this expensive reel is worth it for the kind of fishing that u will do,specially when the GT and tuna in the list. Both species known as a tackle buster.

You might want to check this one up....

I found one used 8500SSJ.....

I would personally using braid, the only things that can be done when using braid in rocky condition is by using a long trace4-6 meter(top-shot) of abrasive mono.Check out YGK usually used by popper caster and jigger.

Paddy imo do not use mono on the reels, you have to use braid, the inherent stretch in the mono will allow the fish, espically gt's to turn and reach the reef before you have even turned the reel handle.
Where are you heading to ?

Tom is this the kind of size needed for the job in hand,, just it looks a bit big for spimming.?
Fri May 25, 2007 12:46 pm
Paddy, its an Accurate-TwinSpin, in the picture its fitted to a boat spinning rod, the rod has both cradle guides and roller nearer the tip. this is what the Californian offshore guys use for Tuna upwards of 100lb, some are over 200lb....those fish are just muscle and fin....if they dive or head away, then you need big gear to spot them.
Edit... check it out here...it doesnt hold that much line for the job in hand IMO

Where is it your going to ?

Well i dont think the accurate 30 have 2 gear.....they only have a twin drag system, like their boss multi series....a system that apply drag at both surface side of spool. An ideal jigging tool....but heard a few bad comment on their power handle, the screw at the elbow tend to fell off, other than that its up to the job.
Btw,other than stella and saltiga....try have a look at shimano twinpower.Usually used as a medium and light jigging and popping tool.Even its light and medium tool, its not a small fish that we are talking about, handling a 10-30 kg GT is still an affordable task by this reel. Those PG and HG model of twinpower are compareble to stella, its consider a mid range or poor man stella.
Theres one more reel that if u re lucky can get your hands on it,ryoby safari metaroyal, one of the best jigging and popping reel....but verry rare nowadays....maybe theres still a few on ebay...beware,the spareparts is verry hard to get these days.
btw paddy, what size of fish that ur targeting(the size that they always accounter from that place) ??if popping from shore, let say for 20kg-30kg GT, a 6000HG or a 8000HG twinpower is sufficient enuff...unless ur going for something bigger from the boat.
Just my 2 cents....cheeerrss....

Joe, your right, I wrote "Gears" instead of drag.....I have edited my post.

Joe,, i just checked out the twinpower TP-6000-FB on shimano,s web site and the line cap is fairly low,,? 14-265/16-170/20-120 as i want to fish mono and not braid it does not leave me alot to play with if casting any decent distances, i cant find the PG or HG modles on there are they a larger capacity?? and what sort of a price tag are they?
I think so far the Fin-nor AHAB20 or larger OF-75 or 85 seems to be a good choice as there drag system seems to have fantastic reviews and it realitivly cheap for a reel of it kind, the thing about the OF series is the spool its very like the Penn SS range and doesnt seem to be geared at popping from the shore.. Id still give my left one for a Van Staal VS250

At that price for a fixed spool  Id say it would be easier to buy a new left one.

Thats is the drawback of mono paddy.....large diameter hence low line caps, specially for spinning reels....then you have to look for large reel wch is heavy for casting......
8000 PG/HG have a line caps of 30lb/160m,30lb mono more or less = 150 lb power pro if u choose to use braid, more than enuff to fight them GT in rought style take no prisoner kill em all.PG is power gear,HG is high gear wch is faster.I am not sure bout FB,but if i m not mistaken, its for fresh water use.Correct me if i am wrong.
The price for Twin power 8000 PG/HG is around euro 224/usd 349 from a japanese online shop.
