Swim Bladders

last sunday i caught a wrasse by the ass no messin, in any ways when i got him back in the water he couldnt dive back down because his swim bladder had inflated is there any way to stop this from happening or a way to deflat it. i didnt see any valves on the wrasse to let the air out. i wasnt fishing in deep water either.

if you put a tiny size hole in it would it kill it? im talkin the size if a point of a hook??

ye thats what i was thinking i was just wondering if there was a was of squeezing it out sounds a bit mad but it might get them away from the gulls

Punctures it will disable the fish and now allow it swim properly, at which point it becomes a live bait only without a hook attached. Some species regurgitate their stomach, sharks notably, and this should not be confused with the swim bladder as they will quickly re-swallow it and suffer no ill effects. You're not likely to confuse it, it stinks like nothing imaginable!

For a small wrasse, best thing if fishing in any depth is to bring them up slowly to allow them time to acclimatise... if they are blown at the top, you can puncture the bladder or kill them on the spot, not a lot more you can do... Big game hunters in the states use a veterinary canula to vent the body cavity of gases on big fish but I have yet to see it tried on a small fish here.

i was boat fishing before and it happined too some of the pollack i was geting. i just pushed it back into one of them..i was not sure what to do as im always shore fishing and it dosnt usually happen then! would that stil kill the fish?
