Clifden Beaches fail to meet EU standards

Hey lads,

Maybe some of you will be able to throw some light on this issue.

Going to Clifden next Thursday for my stag weekend. Plan on doing a lot of fishing and in particular want to try and catch some wrasse out around the doonloughlin area. As well as been a keen sea angler (allbeit new to the seen) I also surf and snorkle in the area. So question is...

1) Will it be safe to eat the fish out of the waters down there?

2) Will it be safe to swim and surf in the waters down there?

dont know if its safe but i generally swim/surf in all the beaces on the west cost that dont have estures in thim becahs with estures are generally dirtir than those without some are safe otheres not

If i can eat fish out of new york harbor and not get sick, i think you should be fine!!! :D

ive eatin fish i caught out in clifton! i didnt get sick!

The beach refered to is the beach just down from the Clifden yacht club. Its about 500meters from the clifden sewage works which is now ceased to function resulting in raw sewage pouring into clifden bay. For those who know the area its a very narrow bay so the sewage is still well concentrated by the time it passes the beach. Other areas away from this bay are perfectly fine.

i personally wouldnt eat fish out of a sewage flow, but if i had to i would make sure to cook it very very well. i dont know why but the thought of eating a bass that has fed on mullet that eat raw sewage just doesnt leave a good taste in my mouth :D

not knowing hte area though i couldnt say anything specific about clifden

Good to know the other beaches are okay. As I said I'll be doing most my fishing and surfing in doonlaughlin out past ballyconeely, so thats good news!

i bought a fishing rod on my honeymoon and got the new wife a magazine and went fishing, well i was in Kerry at the time.

I went fishing on the morning of my wedding and I took the bridesmaid with me ( the wifes sister ). :lol: Still not sure if she really wanted to go fishing or was just keeping an eye on me. We caught a few dogs and it was a great way to end my freedom.

This thread has gone a touch off the original subject :D , very interesting :shock: .

I have fished and swam etc. etc. close to or in Clifden Bay all my life, never experienced any negatives on the water quality. There's a large flow of water in and out of Clifden Bay every tide. So this water quality problem (disgrace) must be hugely diluted by the volume of the Atlantic just at the mouth of the bay.
Another thing that can be seen very occasionally in the area is that after torrential rain the Owenglen River can swell and sends huge volumes of boggy water into the Clifden Bay. The effects of this can be noticed as a browning of the water for a day or two, it's harmless and natural.

I'm not an expert but I am certain that Dunloughan plus dozens of other spots in the area are simply raw Atlantic and nothing else. Enjoy!

Yep fishing on my stag weekend! Doonlaughlin for the first few nights and then we have hired a charter boat for 12 of us to go out fishing! Leaving clifden harbour! Cany wait. Might actually catch something decent!


Regards the honeymoon, I have been told I can bring a rod. So a small telescopic will be travelling with me. Maybe I'll have better look over there :lol:
