Hello everybody how do I learn more?

I just got into sea fishing last year while holidaying in Ballybunion so I'm as amateur as its gets but would love to learn as much as possible about it, my question is where can I learn apart from this great site how to fish properly. Needless to say I've blanked a lot so must be doing something wrong. I've often fished the Cashen Estuary on the Ballybunion to Tralee road and the most I've ever caught was an eel which was terrible as the fish there often show themselves but they wouldn't take my frozen sand eel or frozen peeler crab bait. :(

Best thing for you to do is firstly, carry on reading and secondly put a post in the meets section and see if you can get someone to come out with you for a day and show you the basics. There are quite a few limerick lads on the forum and Im sure one of them will help you out. Welcome to the site BTW.... :wink:

Internet, magazines, Henry Gilbey shows, and if you can, talk to other fishermen, you can learn more in ten minutes talking to someone who knows what they're doing than you will find out yourself in months.

If your interested in fishing the Estuary on long the Limerick marks. Let me know and I'll see what I can do. You just need a beach caster, line of around 18lbs, 6 oz grippers and pulley rigs.

i agree with pete but id also recommend that you join a club. it forces you to fish different venues and lads will usually give you a hand regards baits and rigs (in my opinion these are the 2 most important aspects). other than that perseverence is your only other option.

As the previous anglers have said, the easiest way to catch on (said loosely) is to join a club. You will learn very quickly what and how the better anglers fish, although some members can be very secretive about there rigs etc. If you manage to win a club competition or get a few points on the board it really does give your morale a boost.
We have a few new/newer members into our club and the majority of the lads go out of there way to help. We even make arrangements to go out at times there is no club outings to pass on information and help as much as we can. This info includes casting, bait arrangement and different specifics for different areas

My advise is don't be shy. If you don't ask you don't get. Now your club mates might not appreciate you asking them a great deal of questions in a competition bit I'm sure they will be very forthcoming with answers at the conclusion.

I don't know if being a complete beginner going to comps is best. I head out to fish the Limerick side of the Estuary most weeks and could try and give a few pointers. Just send me a PM.

it might put u off?! not everyone wnats to compete... however in saying that most will be happy to show you how they are fishing a venue and to answer a few questions. browsing forums on the internet can be helpful too. although fishing mags get a lot of stick they can be helpful to showing you basic tackle requirements and familirizing u with specific species. not everything they say is gospel but can be helpful nonetheless. there are a few out monthly.

What I mean is if your a complete beginner and your crossing lines on every cast you mightn't be the most popular guy at a comp.

ah i know Donagh. i just meant that competitions can daunting if your new to the game, particularly if u get throttled!

you should drop by any of the competitions in your area to see if a club is for you. you should also ask the local lads about what time in the tide fishes best for certain areas (as a general rule fishing from about a half hour after the turn of the tide is the best time to start ). hook sizes and fresh bait is important too.

Thanks Donagh have you often fished the Cashen Estuary and what species types have you caught there and what baits were used?
Apologies for the questions but I've fished that area a few times last year but blanked to my misery there was a fish across the water I'm guessing it was either a sea trout or bass that just taunted me by jumping around every now and then :shock: but it didn't seem too keen on my frozen sand eel or peeler crab baits. :oops:

I've fished there alright but not a whole lot as I'd fish the Limerick marks. I'd say it was a sea trout that was jumping and I wouldn't worry if their not taking your bait. The cashen is fed by the Feale which is a famous game fishery.

I don't know where your fishing as theres a few marks around the cashen that are listed here:

Always be suspect about these as they tend to be incorrect but there a good starter point. I'll send me a pm over the weekend as there are alot of bass bashers that visit the cashen taking every fish they get and I don't want to encourage more so I won't be putting it on a public forum.

Took a drive from Ballybunion to Tralee and spotted a sign for the Cashen Estuary just after I set off kept driving and came to a bridge where you can pull off the road and drive down all the way to the water front, looks like the kinda place people bring their boats to. Anyway I just parked up the car there off the road and spent a while spinning, plugging then baited hook with frozen sand eel and then frozen peeler crab

I won't give up though not until I catch something other than an eel there

It'll be worth the trip just to see something being caught :lol:
