Pollack fishing?

Hi lads,

I am a relative newbie to the fishing scene and was just wondering what methods and bait you use to catch pollack? What sort of location should I look for if I was to go pollack fishing?Sorry for the stupid question, I am sure yous are sick of the newbie questions!

mate nearly all rock/weed marks hold pollock , where are you from ?? i might be able to tell you a few spots if your around DUBLIN !!

find rocks with a bit of depth below your feet - spin all types of lures - tobies are thin silver ones - anything from 5 to 15cm - rubber fish or lead heads that look like a rubber worm with a curly tail - stick a hook through them with a weight attached and spin - hence the lead heads

all colours should be tried to see what suits the conditions - expect to loose lures to the rocks/kelp

get to know the ground your fishing over - if it needs to drop further or get casted out a bit - add a lead further up the line

if using floats - again find your depth and put your stop knot on - stick on some mack or sandeel

there are numerous methods - are you planning to target now or later in the year :?: :?: :?:

like corby says..try everything to see what works..i found silver spinners ie german sprats very effective late summer at dusk, it all depends on conditions, altho anything silver will get there eyes focused... eddystone eels are good for them too, red tails, orange and pearl colour ones i found work well down here...u need a long flowing snood for the eel nd keep the weight above the snood...

Thanks for all the advice lads, some great stuff there! Is the best way to hook sandeel by the lip? Are they down deep(in general)?

put the hook in through the mouth and out through the belly - depending on size of hook or sandeel - whip on a bit of elastic thread!

yeah no probs mate !! ill get you out in the boat for a few nice pollock at the back of dalkey island !!

theres a little pier straight across from dalkey island i usually fish there for doggies is it worth spinning for pollock there

in the summer you see lads mack bashing there

had plenty of gud ones floatfishing. slider float. usually fish at a depth of 10-14'. bait is rag or squid strip(represent a sandeel). size 2 kamasan. change depth if not catching. u will take wrasse, mackeral and sumtimes red cod! :lol:


toby lures worth a shot too. remeber to set your drag big pollack will break your line when hooked at close range. the big ones giv a great scrap!!

float fish a sandeel, pollock hit them hard, use jelly worms but dont strick as the first few knocks they just nip the tale but dont worry you'll know when they take the lure, just set the drag right as i have seen a 6lb pollock break a lite spinning rod

Spinning is defo best method - If you can find a bit of water that is slightly sheltered from the sun and hold rocks and weed - you will be onto a winner.

Don't be afraid to let your lure drop deep - most of the pollack will lie in wait on the bottom or among the rocks waiting to ambush any small fish - hence the success of lures.

Pollack are a serious predator and they hunt by sight - bright lures or wriggly jelly worms will work best...

Heed the advice on pollack busting you up - it took me 10 mins to land a 3lb one on light spinning gear last year - they always dive for the weed and try to break you off in the kelp.....

30lb braid on a medium weight spinning rod provides great sport....

One of the best and easiest methods is to deep spin a sandeel or a shad. The best lure for pollack I ever found from the shore I found by accident feathering for mackerel. When feathering for macks in West Clare, you would get the odd pollack alright to standard mackie rigs. It was when I used a trace comprising of red, yellow and a little silver all mixed together though that I began to catch large amounts of Pollack. Double and treble shots of same...

Pollack on lures.....as good as it gets IMHO

I was spinning from a boat once with some friends in southwest Scotland, only a short distance offshore in this little cove....water was Gin clear....as I retrieved my lure ready for the next cast....a Pollack (est 5lb) swam like a torpedo zig-zag from the bottom, shot out of the water at least 2ft into the air and grabbed my lure almost taking the rod from my grip....a couple of my friends seen it happen and couldnt believe it......it remains probably my best memory of any fish I ever caught.

south dub; forty foot,,back of bullock,,,all the rocks at sorento,,, rocks around white rock,,, killiney down by the t rooms,,,,,,,and on and on nearly anywere were there are rocks there are pollock

Cheers for all the advice lads.I went to the back of bullock and actually caught one! Not that big(1.5lb) but it was on light spinning tackle and put up a little fight!

Ya can catch them out at the Wicklow lighthouse just before silver strand beach.
