Whoops! I hink I've blown it. Last post was supposed to be a PM to Sandman.

I hope Maghaberry Prison has rehabilitative fishing outings for its inmates! Just My luck that Magilligan Prison has closed: think of all the rehabilitative bass fishing off Magilligan Strand.

Further correspondences will be from a fishing location in Venezuela. No time to talk..... Off to pack the bags (and tackle) before the security forces pay me a visit.

:shock:

Send us a postcard Esox... :D

lol Pete.... So its 3 Points for anything 40ft+?

Absolutely, 10 points however if you manage to sink one of those factory ships that used to inhabit the lough each year for a couple of months and wreck everybodys TV signals....

On a serious note, a lot of these trawlers are looking for lobster and crab bait. A box of bait (undersized fish) can go for up to 40eu's here in the south, at this time of year. I know of boats,in the past, fishing the Brandon area of Kerry where there is clean ground, for small undersized flats that are perfect for bait. There was a time that trash fish ( undersized discards) would be passed on from trawlers to their little lobster brothers but with the amount of bait being used they soon copped on to start charging. An average sized lobster boat such as the one in the picture could be fishing up to 500 pots twice to 3 times per week. Work out how many undersized fish that could be. I stress that not all of the lobster men would do this but there is still a hell of a lot of bait being used in Ireland during the summer on lobster and crab baits. :cry: :cry: :cry:

very informative caz (welcome to the site!) - just shows how the charge for everything is a reflection of the lack of fish for everything - a vicious circle

and esox - what an entertainer :lol:

Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:21 pm

entertaining posts alright esox!! :lol:
the crab and lobster men up here normally get their bait from the fish dead on arrival on charter boats plus catch their own on rod and line. unfortunately some boats still would keep almost every fish they catch regardless of size for these purposes also....

sounds dumb i know, but its hard to see from the photo, was he actually towing at the time?

Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:30 pm

Difficult to say from the picture as I can't see warps out. The boat doesn't appear to be making way either. But the trawl doors are missing from the gallows, so it's possible.

Mind you, it appears to be missing a few things, like a liferaft, vessel id number and a symbol to indicate it's a fishing vessel. Anyone who knows what the symbol should look like gets a gold star. Two, if you can describe the lights a trawler should carry while fishing at night. :lol:

just took a closer look at the image... with the help of a bit of softwre i was able to see that the vessle is actually anchored (its hard to tell by looking at the pic there but you can just make out the anchor line, if you put the point of your mouse on the top of the bow.. where the tail of the pointer is you can just make out the anchor line, screen res 1024 X 768)
and there are no lines trailing behind either...

I saw that - without image processing algorithms which can often introduce artefacts that weren't actually there. There appears to be another 'line' above that one you pointed out. Also, had the boat been anchored, wouldn't it be lying bow to the wind, rather than across the way- based on wave direction? Also has what looks like an anchor forward of the wheelhouse - although they could have a couple of anchors with them....

Think these are the lights and shapes that should be shown .Fishing Vessels
(a) A vessel engaged in fishing, whether underway or at anchor, shall exhibit only the lights and
shapes prescribed in this Rule.
(b) Avessel when engaged in trawling, by which is meant the dragging through the water of a dredge
net or other apparatus used as a fishing appliance, shall exhibit:
(i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being green and the lower white, or a
shape consisting of two cones with their apexes together in a vertical line one above
the other;
(ii) a masthead light abaft of and higher than the all-round green light; a vessel of less than
50 metres in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such a light but may do so;
(iii) when making way through the water, in addition to the lights prescribed in this
paragraph, sidelights and a stern light.
(c) A vessel engaged in fishing, other than trawling, shall exhibit:
(i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being red and the lower white, or a shape
consisting of two cones with apexes together in a vertical line one above the other;
(ii) when there is outlying gear extending more than 150 metres horizontally from the vessel,
an all- round white light or a cone apex upwards in the direction of the gear;
(iii) when making way through the water, in addition to the lights prescribed in this
paragraph, sidelights and a sternlight.
(d) The additional signals described in Annex II to these Regulations apply to a vessel engaged in
fishing in close proximity to other vessels engaged in fishing.
(e) Avessel when not engaged in fishing shall not exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in this Rule,
but only those prescribed for a vessel of her length.

http://www.rnliseasafety.org.uk/upload/ ... ng/nav.htm Either way he's fishing well to close to shore ,what chance do the fish have . Wonder if you contacted the coastguard would they do anything for not displaying the correct lights or shapes while on a working vessel ,surley these guys have some sort of license .

the boat in question was definately towing a net we watched him for a good while and seen him bring the net up to the bow and lower it again and go of in the opposite direction to us.he went up and down the length of the beach at portsalon and continued to go up and down the lough as we where fishing most of the day.if you look at the back of the boat you can make out a line to the water from a shackle.which was attached to a net.

I've seen that fella towing Swilly before, rays they are after this time of the year. Sickening really, was fishing rocks last year and trawler towed a 100 yards out past me, asshole even tooted his horn for me to wind in my gear (tried to put picture up but can't upload for some reason).

Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:15 pm

Pete, try using Tinypic to upload your image to the bulletin board.

http://www.tinypic.com/

I used it for the modified (torpedos) image.

Pete, you should have reeled in. And promptly sent him a griplead. Missed opportunity. :lol:

if the boat is involved in illegal netting/trawling and is not up to guidelines is it worth an anonymous tip off to the local authorities as there is photographic evidence?? if he continues to do this it could harm the local charter angling enterprise scheme running out of rathmullan etc, therefore leading to a further detromental effect to the wider local economy.

That was terribly Philosophical of you Phillip. :lol: 8)

Unfortunately, we don't seem to have a limit on how close to shore these lads can work.

I've always got my best catches off the little bay at the south end of Portsalon beach - now I know why.

However, if we got enough pics of boats working right into the shore, disrupting other users of the marine environment and we got enough howls of protest from those other users - anglers etc, we might be able to get something done.....
