Are you not thinking of some other muppet called Hugh, the show was called something about River Cottage, i actually enjoyed it too at times, they did look quite like each other, maybe i'm wrong.

comments on programmes

Hi lads

Never seen some of the presenters/programmes discussed but I do agree about the comments on John Wilson, excellent angler, awful laugh!

In fairness to Henry he does contact local anglers but if you had to drive to the NE of Scotland to do a programme, wouldn't you?! I've heard that he does very good reports/pieces on any Irish venues that he has fished.

Just a comment however about taking care with some of your comments about commercial people (who make a living or part of one from the telly) given criticisms could provoke a reaction, and that we have no legal department! :?

Thanks and apologies about the paranoia, but an early UK fishing website was closed down by a single solicitor's letter...

Tight lines

wat was d program on bbc 1 r bbc2 few years ago,2 men going around australia/new zealand fly fhishing in rivers??caught a few nice fish!!

Mon Dec 05, 2005 8:34 pm

yeah , give these guys a break they may not be the best presenters in the world but they do give us something to watch when we cant get out to do it ourselves, and they didnt get the jobs in tv or tackle company consultants by being crap anglers! just jealous i cant have a job like theirs!

the australian one was called a river somewhere. loved it the two lads on it were stand up comedians by trade funny guys.

Anyone remember that programme in the 70's early 80's called 'Out Of Town',showing me age here, anyway used to love it when he's make up a rod down his shed and head off for a spot of fishing,no programmes like this around these days

Tue Dec 06, 2005 11:05 am

I'd happily watch most of them, I find it hard to get out much these days. I have no problem with armchair fishing! Have to say I like Matt Hayes, he knows his stuff and has an easy style.

Some do your nut in though, especially the ones who get a little over exuberant and over excited...

Wilson has to be the master of this......actually makes HIM enjoyable to watch, too. :D

To quote the man himself, "What a stonker!"

Out of Town was presented by Jack Hargreaves and seemed to be based around the South West coast of England.

Yeah but who want Henry Gilbey and his chum to tell everybody where the good spots in Wexford are. I'm finding it hard work finding good spots but thats part of it. I suppose if I look for all the English registration plates parked somewhere then I'll be in the right spot!

 On the subject of John Wilson..I was being introduced to him about a year ago, and as he was about to shake my hand I said "No need for introductions... If it isn't 'REX HUNT'..." Well that went down with John like a lead balloon. But I'll tell you what all my Angling buddies thought it was a scream...Anyway he was a bit miffed for an hour or so but to his credit he shook my hand and was good craic before leaving.
So good luck to John. He's a good sport and very good at his job.

That was a great spot Henry was fishing in the show last Friday, somewhere on the Bera peninsula in Cork, really great spot for Pollock, looked fantastic, might get down there in the Summer.

What I would appreciate is a basics style program. Like Delia teaching us to boil an egg.

I'm personally fed up with the lot of them showing how good they are at it but would love to see a really detailed "this is how I do it" program. I know wind, weather, tides, bait etc are all mixed in a pot to suit specific locations but can you imagine Henry (or anyone else) all tackled up standing on a beach, middle of nowhere, no "old school chum" / ghillie with him.

Here I am, I've brought these X standard baits and as I'm fishing for Y fish I've checked the tides to ensure Z conditions. Now the weather conditions have been like ... so I'm doing ...... I'm using a specific rig for a specific reason etc. etc. This is how to bait a hook properly.

Finally at the end of the program a do and don't flow chart for catching a specific fish would be a great idea.

I like seeing people catching fish - I just wish it were me :D

The wexford article in sea angler put me right off him where he basicaly suggests the guy that was on last night came over here as some sort of expert while there wasn't a decent local angler in the place.

Not the first time ... he went ape in his last series over a couple of schoolies (was it off the Isle of Wight or somewhere like that)

BTW, can any of the real experts recommend a good time to fish the top secret spot where Henry was? I've had problems with heavy debris in the channel last couple of times I've fished the same spot.

Anyone remember Predators ? I always thought that show was good, used to give a good level of detail about the fish in question its habits and habitats and then they went after 1 with some expert in that fish. Was a good format..the presenter was somewhat forgettable though, think it has to be rex hunt and bushy for comic value and Matt Hayes for style and good info.. Although Matt should do more sea fishing really!!! :D

Indeed a fact packed Show would go down well, as opposed to Watching People launching undescribed Rigs and Baits towards the Horizon then going 'Look what caught', I want to know how they tied the Rig, How they presented the Bait, and How th e hell they got it to travel so damn far! lol 8)

Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:57 am

Henry does a bit of that but he is presenting to a couch potato audience - not peop[le who want to hone their skills (or in my case develop some) :D

Wed Dec 21, 2005 1:33 pm

Very good Scotchman.....or even a Roger Baker (Editor of Irish Angler).
Apologies Roger.

Quarterflounder has a point, all of these programs are either too short or dont supply enough info for the new angler starting out.

I think we need a whole new style of reality tv fishing programme. Take one novice, but eager, angler.

Send a film crew out with them to a mark - different one every weekend - around the whole coast - for a year. Hard to beat a show where you can suggets they fish a mark near you...

They explain what they're trying to do - showing how to tie the rigs they're using, how to find/dig bait, tune a multiplier, whatever. All the things you usually have to learn from books, videos, mags, asking here etc

Then they bait up and cast out. We see how they get on.

After the programme, we all get to email in to the show telling the novice what they did wrong - so they can learn from it. I'd assume that doing it wrong, seeing the results, then getting advice would show the right and wrong way to do stuff - everything from tackle to tides, watercraft, clothing, accessories, bait, marks, species - the works.

How class would it be to have a programme where you knew more about angling or a particular mark (probably) than the star/presenter?

a 'fact filled ' programme for sea anglers may not attract as many viewers who are really interested for sky or that to put it on, i think that it would be far better if more sea angling dvds were produced for instructional purposes, then that way they arent going to be curtailled to a half hour show. surely there would be a good market for them that way??
