Bright headlights on water

why does every thread on here end up being about Bass?

I know where Patk was fishing and I presume his primary target was bass - hence my references to bass.

We have a strict no lights and not talking rule when fishing at night.

Well said - that one of the reasons I prefer to fish alone, sound carries and I am sure a bunch of guys yaking on the beach will put off the fish as much as a headlamp shining across the water.

Here's a funny story:
A couple of years ago in summer time on a dark moonless night I was fishing a West Waterford beach with my headlamp off. A car pulled into the car park up behind me and a few minutes later I heard people behind me running down the beach towards the shore. I turned around switched on my lamp (which had fresh batteries so had a strong beam) and illuminated two couples heading down for some skinny dipping unaware that I was on the beach. Not sure which of us got the biggest shock!!!!

A few weeks ago i was wading a mark about 3am had my lensor on but was keeping my head down casting the lure as far as i could into the darkness, i was just about to recast when i spotted a shadow swim lazily into the light a nice fish more than likely a bass after following the lure in and it showed no reaction to being in the light swimming around me at a slowish tempo then moving on, the fish was about 6lb+ i didnt move a muscle. Shortly afterwards i hooked a nice flounder within 10 yards of where i was standing, i reckon the light from my headlamp had something to with it sparkling up the silver plug. A few other things, fishing the ferrypoint seaward side on calmish nites as a car would come round the bend near the lighthouse in youghal its lights would hit the water i was fishing more often than not it would result in a coalfish hit. A guy i used to know in wexford once ran an electric cable from his dads holiday home near the rocks and using a powerful lamp sparkling up hooks tied with ciggarette foil paper managed to pull 2 nice bass dont know if he persevered with that method. Ive had a few bass myself not long after a car/cars had lit up the whole beach. Personally though i would rather keep it natural i experienced a guy with an obvious twitch, broken switch and strongest beam i ever seen fishing a beach i was on back in spring it was like being at a prodigy gig

Don't know about bass but it definitely seems to have no effect on flounder. I fish a beach near here where cars regularly pull in on the prom behind the beach and shine their headlights on the water, often leaving them on for a while - plenty of activity in the car park, God knows what would be going on up there . Doesn't seem to have any effect on flounder catches. Have also heard of skinny dipping there but yet to see it, think stevecrow has had an eyeful alright!

On the subject of skinny dipping, 2 mates of mine (and their girlfriends) did it one night on Portmarnock beach after attending Tamangos nightclub, but unfortunately had their clothes (including wallets, money and house keys) stolen while they were "frolicking" in the water. That took some explaining apparently when they got home I believe the taxi driver who picked them up had an entertaining journey...
