Reply to Roger, surely if you needed any beach articals (besides Kevin Brain) who is a sound lad and a heart and soul angler. Tony Santry and Tim O'Sullivan surely world class Irish anglers both fish for your local angling club in Waterville??????? Dont tell me they have no pics.

sorry lads. got to defend Roger on this one. I won a reel for a letter I sent. (yes it was about river fishing) but within a week of giving my address I got the reel. And I did make sure I e mailed him to let him know. As regard sea angling. I "would" like to see more in the mag, so I hope he takes us up on this. But, I river fish and sea fish so I am quite happy. Cant please everyone all the time sad to say.

Well i notice that roger didnt answer any of the pints that i raised, except to give his standard "it can be hard to contact me" and " send in your articles and i will read them" reply..
Regardless of this either way i still dont buy the mag. its not about giving the magazine a fair chance, or supporting this irish venture or even thinking the subscription service is good or bad. I just dont think its value for money or that i learn anything from it, so i dont buy it simple as that

I thought Roger's response covered the main points. He's doubtless a busy man, involved in much more than Irish Angler, btw, and may not have time to answer every single e-mail or read every single post every angler puts out. It's not bad manners, it's time management.
He did ask that any submissions have good photos - noting that any written accompaniment could be easily tarted up for publication. tarting up hopeless pics with photoshop is usually more work than it's worth - unless you work for the Sun
He's the Editor and as such is not responsible or indeed involved in the logistics associated with subscriptions, prizes etc. That really shouldn't have needed explaining to anyone.
What he is responsible for is selecting the content. He explained the breakdown between the various angling disciplines. If more sea anglers actively contributed usable content (note emphasis on good pics above), I'm sure the mag's content would reflect that.
There are things I'd like to see in a mag that aren't there. Rather than see a shiny new rod, reel or other bit of tackle 'bench reviewed', for example, I'd like to see a draw every month (or randomly drawn subscribers) for the review items and the winner gets to test (and keep) the tackle for say 90 days and then reports on how well it stood up in the field. That's real product reviewing.
I'd also like to see more articles on actually how to fish certain types of venues - rather than reports on how some bod caught xy&z at famous mark A - particularly on some of the lesser known marks. Indeed, if possible, marks that no-one has heard a report from yet.
I'm not going to spit the dummy just because the mag's not exactly as I like it - it'll do until something better comes along (preferably in an electronic format, hint, hint). I'm also humble enough to admit I don't know it all yet either...and if I only pick up one tip per issue, we'll, a tip's a tip and one I wouldn't have got otherwise.
So, moral of story, send GOOD pics - being literate along with that is only a bonus - the mag has no shortage of writers, I'm sure. If you number the photos as they are taken and include your name and the date & venue - if they're good pics anyone should be able to write what happened....

Just to say I didn't blame roger or even mention his name in my post. I know this is nothing to do with him, but the publishing office in England.
I just asked has anyone else waited, what is now about 7 weeks, for the sub gift.
Anywho, I like your idea on those tackle reviews, it would provide proper info instead of just ads and I'm sure anyone would be up for it.
Also I'd say some of us would be able to come up with good reports and photos of our local everyday marks instead of the ones we have heard a hundred reviews from.
tight lines.

do you get paid if you get your pics and report published?
Wed Nov 02, 2005 9:44 am
I doubt it, but there would be a certain amount of kudos involved in getting published - reward enough for me.
It would be nice if it got you to the top of the list to review kit, though. At least that way if you got to keep what you reviewed, you'd have something tangible for your efforts.
I'll drop Roger an email in case he hasn't surfed this thread. Might be a few ideas for him to play with....

Hi
I've tried giving readers tackle to review and I am afraid it does not work. The distributors are still waiting for something in return, just a few words would have done.
It surprises me that there is so little interest in fish stocks and conservation issues. Copy and paste this into your browser and take a look. I'd be interested to know what people think.

Hi again
Let's see if this one brings any response?
http://www.westernmorningnews.co.uk/dis ... ebarsearch
Also, I am currently trying to determine if there is enough interest in Irish sea angling, from residents, to make a monthly 'Irish Sea Angler' style magazine feasible. If we assume that 30% of 'Irish Angler' magazine's 12000 regular readers (3600) are primarily sea anglers, would they, plus a further 6,400 sea anglers regularly buy a magazine totally dedicated to Irish sea angling - shore, boat and dinghy?
If you think yes, tell me how you have derived your figures.
Thanks
Roger

Lads,
As an Englishman living in Dublin and reading through this thread is brings many issues to my memories with SeaAngler, once a good magazine, now a catologue for the tackle trade, you can pick up almost any old copy and it will read almost the same as the current months issue, I don't think they work hard enough or pay the article writers enough, but if you ask anyone on the beach "Why the F do you buy it then" most tell you the same thing " for the match results"
Delivery wise, SA have had as many problems in the UK, with years behind them, at one time they used a postal company that meant the magazine was delivered to Zurich in Switzerland then on to the customer, some kind of bulk delivery deal they done to save money, that in itself is not bad, but if it effects the time your magazine take to your door, then it does.
Hearing Roger mention a readers threat of legal action regarding a prize makes me laugh, I owned a very well known tackle company years back in the UK, I sold out over 15 years ago now, but I used to give out prizes in SeaAngler 3 or 4 times a year, once over the guy who won along with 2 other readers was a way out of stock size and his clothing had to be made specifically for him, within a week I had his wife telling me she was going to report me to the Queen and all under her for being a con merchant, that was the last time I ever donated anything to the Magazine. Humorous to a degree but not needed.
I agree with almost all what Roger is saying and would like to add very respectfully on his behalf, what he is doing is a commercial venture, likewise it needs to make money, a very hard thing for such a magazine to do in this day of the Internet. Like anyone in his shoes he will want what he is doing to be a success, to achieve that he needs the help of as many interested readers as possible, good mags give their readers what they want and good mags listen.
I think Ireland still attracts many overseas anglers fresh as well as saltwater, a good well written mag with good photography that has its finger right on the button would go down as well in the UK as it would over here, it seems to be a slow process though.
Sorry if this turned into a rant 8)
Good Luck.
Tom.

Roger, Any chance of having your magazine distributed by Newspread too instead of just Easons and presumably News Brothers?? I am a symbol group retailer in Cork and due to the trading agreement I have I buy all my magazines from Newspread. I have been told upon trying to order copies of Irish Angler, they dont distribute it. I see no point in opening an account with another company to supply one monthly magazine for my store.

sorry to bring this to the top again just tought I would say that Roger was very helpful with my subscription gift problem, he seemed concened and told me what to do even though this area is not his responsibility. :D
After (nothing happened trying to contact subs department with no reply) he sent an e-mail to them himself to e-mail me. So the reply came and I was told sorry and was generously offered a reel that suited me better and that it would be sent to me at end of the week. Unfortunately that was 3 weeks ago so its looking like I won't get reel after 2 months of waiting and trying to sort the problem. May even have got lost in post?
Anyway Roger was more than helpfull so i'd like to say thanks to him 8)

Lads,
I've just joined this forum and I have to say I'm stunned at some of the comments on this thread! I can't believe that people are complaining about the content of Irish Angler! Personally, I think the beauty of this mag is that it encourages branching out into new areas of our sport.
Historically, I've always fished for Pike in winter and bass in summer. However, because of articles I've read in Irish Angler, I now fish for bream, tench, carp and rudd with standard coarse gear. I fish for pike, sea trout and mullet on fly. I've even paid a visit to a stocked rainbow trout fishery which I have to say I enjoyed!
If you spend a lot of time pulling in flounder and dabs on 6-8oz beachcasters, I beacdefy you not to savour a battle with a tench or a mullet on light gear. I can guarantee you that you will have a smile as broad as yourself for the remainder of the day!
So lets open our minds a little? There is a lot of reasonably priced tackle out there that will do a job and introduce you to a different branch of our sport. So lets embrace Irish Angler for what it is and get out there and try something different?
All the best and tight lines!
Mick

Hey Col, I gotta sympathise with you mate - thats P-Poor service in anyones book. I dont care who's to blame I don't know anyone who'd be happy with that kind of (lack of) service either. Well done for keeping your cool aswell eh - credit where credits due.
As for you AdamS - If I were you, I'd be feeling pretty hacked off with RB. The test email you set up with your mate offering an article and getting an imediate reply proves one thing to me - you have been treated very rudely, and thats bang out of order in my book. I mean all you were asking for some confirmation for gods sake! If he was too busy to reply to you then by rights he ought to have been too busy to reply to your mate.
I don't care how busy someone is with other ventures, all it would've took was an "Ah I'm sorry I havent got back to you etc etc" but not even that eh?
Ah well lessons learned as they say...
I've seen a few editions of IA and some of the sea stuff was quite good but from a personal viewpoint I gotta agree there aint enough of it to warrant a subscription.
Errrr....especially after reading this thread!! Will still "browse" it in the Newsagents FOC tho, just like SA...he said lol.

I don't to have the time to branch out into other areas of shore fishing let alone trying other branchs of coarse or game. Had a look in the last few copies of the mag and theres been no shore fishing articles with two or three boat fishing articles in the magazines I looked at so it was left on the shelf.

Hi
Just like to point out that Roger has passed on the mantle of editor to David Dinsmore, FYI...
Roger is off fishing in India at the moment, so no need to feel sorry for him
Thanks
