he had a tip about using a milk bottle and a rock to mark possible spots at low tide which was good.
I use a digital camera and take a series of shots at marks at low water, which is handy because you'd normally have yer camera with you when you're fishing anyway and you can just scroll through your recon work and then have an idea of what the ground looks like underwater when you're there to fish

that's a good tip about the camera. i like it.

Did he mention his custom built rods I bought one from him and find it a good rod nice and light with good recovery and great cast I gave a few anglers who are well into their rods and they liked its action.

he said that when you go to marks at low tide, and see there uncovered a bassy-looking gully or rock outcrop under or along which our fishy friends would come in on the tide rooting for foodstuffs, then one way to easily find it again at high water when it's all covered over is to attach an empty presumebaly plastik milk bottle to a rock with a length of rope (the rope length presumebaly equivalent to the estimated water level) and then put the rock in the gully or fish-holding feature so that when you come along at high water you have a floating milk bottle, under which should be a fish-holding feature to aim for

fish small coves, shallow flat sand beaches, shallow rock marks on top of reefs, bass lurk around rocks, gulleys boardered by rocks....creases in the water, often near shore, also worth a shot.
on sandy beaches retrieve plugs so as they hit the bottom, then let them rise. this immatates sandeel leaving the sand, something thay do in morning and evening. fish floaters over shallow reefs and shallow divers throught the gulleys.

he recommends stiff rod for spinning. makes it easier to bring the lure/ plug to life as little of the jerking/ twitching is absorbed by the rod. use braid for same reason.

i'll add more if i can think of them. he does spend lots of time picking his spots.

He used an empty bottle tied off to a rock to mark a spot he was interested in fishing over if the ground looked good at low tide. He mentioned that this year he was fishing spots that he normally wouldn't fish as the beaches weren't producing that well. On one spot he like he marked it with the milk bottle and himself and a friend had 40 :shock: bass of it in a 3 hour session I think it was. Most between 3 and 5lb....
He mentioned that the bait was razor fish and lug and something else????? Something that stays on the hook forever...can't remember exactly what it was. He also mentioned that the plug and fly fishing was very poor last year, something I witnessed myself.

I think I'll be down that way next year for a long weekend. I'll get a days guiding off him for sure. Any takers????

Thought it was hard to shift through the s*** to get to the good stuff. Have to admit I bought a bit of crap but also got a double tripod for 50 which I thought was good also got some Penn lines at a good price as compared with online stores. I have been wanting to have a go with them for a while.

I was down in Dingle last Easter. The quietest weekend of the year with zero wind and zero swell. Fished Smerick for a while and had a great time with Bob. He sells the ammo sandeel at 3 euro - a lot cheaper than anywhere in dublin. His rods are fantastic, particularly the plugging rod - very expensive though, you have to be very serious.
He seems to concentrate on the fly now, but gave me some invaluable tips on how to use a plug, and what plugs to use. Its great to get a bit of confidence in what you are doing. I have both the books and would recommend them to everyone. They are invaluable if fishing the peninsula.

the other bait was clam.he said the bait will stay on the hook all day.he also said lug is decent for smalller bass.didnt mention rag but i dont think they have them in dingle because the water is clean and rag only live in mud.

Yeah, thats right, got a couple, threw in a forceps and pack of floats too :) .
Wasnt just 15lb though, there were a few combos when i was at it, 15,20,25....

I saw new mustad swivels and booms by mustad and on one of the tackle stands and one of the new swivels had only one eye anyone use one of these yet :idea:

maybe the line passes through what used to be the barrel of a standard swivel? the eye taking the snood.

similar idea is used on the continent, except it it is based more on a bead than swivel design. leader line passes through bead and the snood is then passed through another whole in the bead and held in place with a knot. apparently these are no use over here because the sand is more coarse and damages the snood where it sits in the bead.

have seen the booms alright, the plastic ones?? thought they looked a bit crude?

i was there both days, and picked up a few nice deals..
i bought two penn long beech boat multipliers for 150 euro and vulcan x 8lb class boat rod all on the cheap and to top it all off a shammano tdl 15 for under 100 euro :P .. and got a days tuna fishing for next season :D
so all in all i taught it was a pretty good w/e..

I 've chatted to Bob a few times at his house when even I'm down that direction. I normally give him a few flies and ask him how the fishing is. Never knew that he didn't bother with guiding. I always assumed that he done a bit. Maybe I'll just bring a few extra flies with me this year :D I would also reccommend both his books if you are thinking of fishing the Dingle peninsula. His third book is a really nice coffee table book with some really nice pictures and captions.

hes a bit of a legend alright. his books are well worth getting and cost half nothing to boot.
