was talking to an "expert" earlier, he reckons it razor......the part thats redish was caused by being in the fishes stomach acid whilst the white part hadnt gotten that far down yet......sounds plausible

not a razor, way 2 big n tuff, the red bit was protruding from both fishs mouths, they have no probs. swalllowing full razors. it was about ft. long.. think it was a shellfish of somesort?????

did you try slicing it in half, if its a solid mass then razor(maybe) but if it has guts then it could be a fish of some sort (rockling maybe) or sea cucumber

Hi man,looks like male razor fish to me altough these are usually smaller than the females.

been looking through hundreds of photos online, everything from sea cucumbers, anemonies, cuttlefish, dog whelk eggs , sponges etc etc. think maybe it washed down from strangford lough

i still say a razor, razor flesh can be quite tough and i have seen big ones nigh on a foot long.

It could be the siphons of a 'Sand Gaper' Mya arenaria. These soft shell clams can grow to be the size of your hand and live in mud down to 0.5 meters in depth. Their siphons, from which they feed and breath from, are so big that it cannot be drawn back into the shell. What also backs up my theory is that the red end of the picture seems to show a split which would back up the 'Siphon' suggestion as bivalve shellfish have 2 vents in the end of their siphon. They do occur in Ireland and I am sure you have all seen the shells washed up after a storm though they are usually well bleached when we see them.

Possible that it's an ascidian (sea squirt)., Have a very tough outer skin and can appear in wide variety of colours. That looks a small bit like Cliona intestinalis

whatever they are the bass sure liked them. No coincedence that both bass had them in their mouths, suppose the similarity to a squid bell or razor helps in their being on the menu

none of the above, we all know what razor smells like, it wasent 1. it was way to big to be the clam, i have seen n used same 1s, the red bit was protruding from the mouth and not in the stomacs,, u see this reddening in most food that is not compleatly swallowed,,,, 2 big to swallow.. the section in the pic is only about 2/5th of the total lenth, the missing section was longer and thicker!!! and looked like the body, the part above being the foot would have said it was a very very big razor ?but it didnt smell like 1 stumped..

You'll get two baits from each gaper clam or one big one. One bait from the soft internal body and for the second split and remove the outer skin from the foot.

Just for interest squid eggs are a bit like big frog spawn if a longish tube. Tend to be found in bundles (can look like a mop head) sometimes on the shore but I normally see them attached to crab pots or creels.
