Flat fish identity?

Now to throw the cat amongst the pigeons ...how do you tell a flounder and plaice apart?

a flounder has rough thorns at the top of lateral line just where it connects to its head a plaice is smooth to the touch

deffo a flounder. erics description is spot on.a dab is a dab is a dab!
flounders vary hugely in colour but not in shape, belly colour or the nodules that run right the way down the fins plus the extended tail lenght!

ID ing a flat (Dab, Plaice, Flounder) is easy. Rub your hand from tail to head of the flat in question.

If its rough all over its a dab.

If its rough only on the lateral line its a flounder.

If its completly smooth and has knobly bits on its head its a plaice.


This is actually how fish scientists decide if they are not 100% sure of the ID.

You don't even need your eyes open for this ID method.

Well what, where you run your finger up the lateral line and its smooth until the lateral line curves and then its rough with knobbly bits?

I was fishing down in courttown myself on saturday morning and had a flounder exactly the same.

I would say flounder as i cant see the pronounced curve in the lateral line as in pic of dab below.

thats because its right where the flash of your camera is !! defo flounder, cant believe people think its a dab

The nobbley bits on a plaices head are smooth and beyond the lateral line. The rough area up the back of a flounder are on the lateral line and are rough even sharp.

Btw - Plaice also have a more diamond shape than the other two.

disagree - my first question is always how diamond is the shape - more diamond more flounder in my book

not happy with shape then its feel up the little bugger

But i can see the curve in the pic of the Dab ,,,its the original pic i cant see the curve in ,,,,,think we're getting crossed lines

any way its a flounders but if we were going for species points it would be a dab or plaice depending on what he doesnt have
