i might be smiling in that pic but give me a tope from the shore any day over a bass

Bass have the X factor

i have to say a sea trout is a far better fighter than a bass

so they would be my favourite catch

other fish like huss/conger can be very interesting getting them out of holes, up cliffs, rocks etc.

pretty much agree with saltys comments its about getting out and trying to reach your targets

eric your not mad - theres just two groups - the bass obsessed and the rest

and im firmly in the group of the rest - minis species one day - big wrasse the next - rays - dogs - flats - bass targets change every otherday - just keeps the fishing so interesting

and the prize for best fish in the sea to catch on a rod and line goes to...........the mackerel , pound for pound the best fighter out there on lite gear, plentiful, most flavour, your not killing something older than yourself, don't need to be albert einstein to catch one, and they fight even out of water by squirting their crap all over you

my obsession with bass stems from the fact that ive never caught one........i only started fishing this summer mainly for mack and only tried bait fishing 2 months ago. if and when i do get a bass im hoping i wont be disappointed with the fight, look of it, and if big enough-the taste of it.

must say tho, i love a mack on a light rod. mighty craic and the best bit is, if you get 1, you'll probably get 20 of them.
only had a loan of a spinning rod durin the summer but gettin one from the missus for xmas.

had this little baby the other night, spent 12 hours stalking in 6 inches of water, heart was pounding with the raging surf, chucked the finest plugs and fresh crab at it, eventually took sandeel, the fish fought all the way to the surface couldn't get over its sheer power, didn't think it tasted great though, maybe sushi isnt for everyone

Bass are amazing best fighting fish in the sea give me my 11ft spinning rod 8lb braid and a few maria chases and i am good to go catching bass is one of the best feelings in the world. The whistle in the braid when a fish is hooked and the rod is bent double music to my ears

If you keep taking them home there wont be many left to whistle your braid and bend your rod

Sushi, like regular food, requires that the fish be de-scaled ect prior to eating....looks like you couldnt wait eric, dont you get fed at home

Next time, you can borrow my cigarette lighter to cook it, a fish that size shouldnt take more than a minute or so

I dont really think that comment was called for. If an ANGLER decides to keep a fish that they catch and brings it home and eats it well then thats entirely up to them. Just because I practice catch and release doesnt really give me the right to tell someone else to do the same thing!!!! A picture of a guy holding a bass in his house does not amount to mass murder.

To the earlier comment i have only been fishing since last may and in that time i have caught 9 bass and kept 4 and any time i have caught 1 i release it and only keep 1 if i catch 2 or more and t be honest every time i have kept one i felt bad afterwards because they are the most amazing fish in the sea and to think of them being wiped out is gut wrenching. support all efforts to release most fish i even release mackerel but thats a different subject. So don't judge an angler by comments made about the sport of bass fishing seashark

Regarding descaling of bass.... this is something I always had difficulty in doing for some reason (the one fish I kept this year )
When I try to descale backwards with the head/back of the knife, I get in under the scales but the skin always starts to rip and I have to stop.
Any suggestions? (and please don't say C&R )

I get a kick out of catching any fish no matter how small regardless of species. There is something very thrilling out of watching a motionless rod tip suddenly quiver and knowing you have a fish on the end. Of course the stronger the fight it puts up then all the more exciting. But for some reason the thrill of hooking a bass is much greater, it sets the heart beating faster, adrenalin rushing, especially the moment when you haul that gleaming silver fish out of the surf. No other fish can do that for me.

try using a blunt knife ,its all about the angle you hold the knife at if you go over 90 degrees with a sharp knife you will cut the skin,its a bit like casting a lesson from a pro goes a long way ,cut the fin,s off first descale then gut afterwards
