Now, i am well aware that these things need lots of pratice and are expensive, but wat do u guys think about them?
I was thinking of getting one for sandeels and other small bait fish. Do you think it is worth it?

They look like they need a little practice alright. I'm not too sure how effective they would be for sandeels as these tend to burrow in the sand. They would be good for collecting some small live baits to fish below a float for Bass. Would also be good for small mullet for live baits. I'd guess they have a few uses, but might not be too practical :?:

could be a handy way to stock up on bait, it should be worth a go round piers etc. when shaols of sandeels and small pollack accumulate at the right time of year

Strange that you are thinking of one of these, i just happened to be lokoing at them the other day and wondered how well they would work in the summer when you see thousands of sandeel around the piers.

as far as i remember (i was told by someone in the western fisheries yrs ago) that any and all fish baits have to be killed after being caught if they are to be used as whole baits...
dunno if this is the case up in the north though.. i think you can use livebait up there...

The live bait ban is definately fresh water only and was designed to stop the spread of roach , used as pike livebaits, in inland waterways.
Thu Jan 04, 2007 8:31 am
If it was a blanket ban on live baiting across the board due to cruelty, where do worms and crabs etc come into it? It would be daft to say that its ok to impale some animals but not others for bait purposes. It would also be daft to say you cant livebait using fishbaits as its cruel but you can go and catch them and put them through similar rigours that way.
My understanding of the ban would be similar to Neils TBH, I cant see it working any other way. Perhaps someone could find the particular piece of legislation and post it up? I wouldnt have a notion where to start looking.
Thu Jan 04, 2007 9:08 am
I dont have a piece of legislation but i am 100% shure that it is illegal in saltwater but it only applies to fish. crusteations and worms arnt affected.
I wasnt gonna use the net for live bait anyways. i was gonna ues it for catching sandeels and freezing them for ray and dogs.......
I was also gonna use it for catching small amounts of mack to freeze for bait. If i coud get about 200yrds offshore in a small boat then i'd be in business  .

Found this....Taken from the SRFB site: I might add, its not that I have a strong opinion on it either way to be honest, I just think it would be a pointless law from a cruelty aspect unless all forms of livebaiting were banned and we worked out some way of catching fish on rod and line without impaling them....
CONSERVATION OF AND PROHIBITION ON SALE OF COARSE FISH BYE-LAW NO. 806, 2006
A person shall not take and kill by any means more than 4 coarse fish on any one day.
A person shall not take or kill by any means any coarse fish greater than 25 cm in length measured in a straight line from the tip of the snout to the fork of the tail
Any coarse fish taken inadvertently in contravention of this Bye-law must be handled carefully and returned without avoidable injury to the waters from which they have been taken
it is prohibited for any person, other than in the Louth Area or Moville Area, to sell or offer for sale any coarse fish caught by any means.
"Louth Area" has the meaning assigned to it by section 31 of the British - Irish Agreement Act 1999 (No. 1 of 1999)
"Moville Area" has the meaning assigned to it by section to it by section 2 of the Foyle Fisheries Act 1952 (No.5 of 1952)
it is prohibited to use or attempt to use live fish as bait in fishing in fresh water
it is prohibited to transfer for any purpose live roach (Rutilus rutilus) from any waters to any other waters
it is prohibited to fish for coarse fish by any means whatsoever other than by rod and line
A person may not attempt to fish for coarse fish in freshwater with more than two (2) rods at any one time.
A copy of the Bye-laws governing the above regulations can be DOWNLOADED HERE
This is also repeated on the CFB site amongst others. The Byelaw (No. 592), governing livebaiting SPECIFICALLY relates to freshwater.
Its interesting to note that amongst all the bag limits, bye laws and protection that is being offered to coarse fish, the only legislation relating to sea angling is that of the Bass bag limit and ban......Not really good enough is it? And we wonder why Andy and Sandman amongst others are going off the head on a constant basis....
