WHAT IS THE BEST FIXED SPOOL REEL FOR DISTANCE CASTING ?????

Just wondering what others think is the best fixed spool reel for distance casting.

I have returned to the fixed spool as easier than multipliers they dont need tuning and no birds nests at night. There are mixed views on the distance they can achieve compared to the multiplier but during the summer i saw them being used in casting comps in Europe and they were getting distances more than i need to enjoy my fishing.

I have a penn surfmaster 850 and a grauvell Zeus Z5000 both fish and cast very well.

I know want to get into casting bigger distances using these reels and wish your advice on which reel is best suited.

All right pookie I have used various fixed spools for casting I find its not the reel but more the diameter of the line that makes the difference to the cast, I am using a 14lb line that has the diameter of a 10lb line and it has made a huge difference to my cast...Lazy Merry Christmas

Try putting braid (e.g. 30lb powerpro) on the low profile spool of the Z5000 instead of mono. I've got a Z5000 and this helped improve my distance.

Got a Shimano big baitrunner long cast, And a Shimano ultegra 14000 xt. :) Both reels are great for beachcasting, And can hold a massive amount of line with a solid metal spool.

if you drop line diameter the extra distance is shockin! 8 or 10lb line and cast goes on 4ever!!!

daiwa r meant 2 have the best fixed spool reel 4 casting... dunno which model...if that helps lol

Apparently the Daiwa Basia is the reel with the best line lay and casting potential. Though, for alot less money the Shimano Ultegra range are supposed to be almost as good.

I've been using the 850 for a few weeks now. Unfortunately I haven't caught anything on it yet :( but it casts really well, and made short work of reeling in about 40 pounds of Kelp.

Mac, Its not nice when you buy something and dont catch, but the fish will come to you sometime. Did you get yours from B A C? and if so whats he charging? cheers

another vote for the diawa basia here , i have been using a pair of them for a year now and rekon they are second to none , they are expensive but you can buy them from ebay HK for well under £200.

I don't mind that much, a day's fishing, even if I blank, is better than one in the office. I've been trying out Lazy Lug, so maybe that's part of the problem.
Yeah, I got it from BAC, both the 750 and 850 were 50 quid, and he wouldn't budge on price at all.

I was looking info on the surfmaster from other users so very helpful there lads. As i use one i can say in my view it casts well and handles fish with ease.

I would love the daiwa reel as a big daiwa fan but due to a wife imposed budget it will be summer before i can look at them.
I spent to much getting started last year went from fixed spool start up to multipliers and new year have went back to the fixed and 6 beach rods to match, so she a wee bit of a bear at moment so i think for the sake off my marrage i will have to wait lol

Anyway she just got into the sea angling so her turn to buy some kit.

in my opinion, the shimano fixed spools have served me the best over the years, i would recomend them for general distance fishing

I would highly recommend the Shimano Ultegra 14000 xt :D
Shimano Big pit baitrunners are also a great reel, But are a bit heavy because of the built in baitrunner :?
The Daiwa Emblem Z5500A is a top of the range reel for beachcasting but as rare as hens teeth. (Love to get one)

i had a look at the Penn reels meself and they look pretty good value for money .
...............i think i will stick with my Diawas for the time being . If any of the lads are interested i have found ebays carping section is a very good place to buy secondhand big pit or tournament reels , the emblem z series come up all the time , normally for around £30-£40 a go .

I bought a Basia and by far its the best casting tool around, at just 17oz's its nice and light too. Very expensive but well worth it.
