Tripod recommendations

... but I thought I'd start a new topic.

My current tripod is bent (!) and I want to replace it with an Ian Golds ... but which one? I'd like to get one with a conversion option from one to two cup, or vice versa. Must be light(ish) for walking long distances. Must be suitable for either beach or rocks. Probably 6ft. Any thoughts?

I'm attracted by the telescopic ones. Will they take as much punishment as the fixed tripods?

Any accessories worth getting?

I would strongly recommend the golds super match watch out f
or inferior tripod makes which are simply not up to the job.

the veals craig parker is meant to be a very stable one but its pretty expensive (https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/Tripods.html).ive the ian golds one and wouldnt see reason to change it.

I have the 6ft double cup and would highly reccomend it.
It is very lightweight and nearly industructable, i would also reccomend getting the leg locking kit with it.

I have never seen the point in one cup tripods cos then u cant hold a second rod ready to go in comps...just my point of view though.

Thinking of transport convenience and long-distance marching. Do the double cups fold or detach if I wanted to wrap it up in my rod bag?

how long are these yolks myself and 2 other friends want to buy tripods preferably ones that would fit in the back of a car

Teacher, they fold inline with the rest of the tripod.

Fenitbob, they are 6ft long.

the head on the tripod is held by a locking nut so thatyou can slacken it off hed the head twistis so it lies parallel with the main shaft of the tripod, same with cups at the bottom

Chapter and Verse on Ian Golds rod rests

1/ The Super-Match comes in double or single head and cups...the single head and the double head along with the cups DO fold inline with the main leg for sliding into a rod bag or normal storage.

2/ The Single Head Super-Match is slightly more stable in really heavy winds or very strong tides....,simply because of its centre of balance. both have a hooked head design when turned into the wind or tide makes the rod less likely to be pulled out of the head.

3/ The Telescopic is very sturdy and the best rest in his range for rock fishing, but on shingle or sand its not quite as rigid as the Super-Match because of the angled back leg of the later.


4/ The Leg Lock kit works on most of the models in his range, it does what it says...locks the legs...this means you can pick the whole rest up, even with the rods still on and walk either back or down with the tide...

5/ Rig Bar, this will fit on all of the models in his range and clips anto the front legs and will hold 4 made up rigs ready for use.

i bought the 7ft supermatch double head and then bought the single head and cup and leg lock as well, now i have all of these fitted at once, so if needed, 3 rod holders and leg lock, handy so you can lift tripod and 3 rods at once if required, highlyrecommend the ian golds range

I have had the plastic head rests on the Ian golds break on two occasions in two years. This did not happen through falls but on both occasions from banging the bottom ring when putting the butt of the rod into the sand.

That must have been on a really cold night, as ABS plastic can go brittle if its in extreme cold, it returns to normal when normal again, but its the only time anything like that would break it.

That said....inform Goldsy and he would send out replacements ASAP.

You are 100% sure it was a Goldsy stand....people have bought stands that have gone wrong and sent them back to him only to find they werent his in the first place :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

i agree with tom, it either must have been really cold coz ive put mine through everythig u could think of and it still hasnt broken.

my mate sam has triped over and fell and smashed and bent more ian golds tripods than he can care to remember :roll:

Yeah I've just gone out and checked again, its an Ian Golds super match tripod, I can't remember what conditions were the first time but the last one broke in November in Killiney when it was mild. I was able to get a complete new head the first time and had kept the broken one. The second time it broke I just exchanged the good side off the old one for the broken bit.

If you'd of contacted Goldsy he would have sent you new parts FOC

Thats the problem with making tripods, if they break you've not got a leg to stand on :lol: :lol: :lol:
