what are the limitations of fishin braid straight through to rig? what breaking strain do yee recommend for the job?....

A few guys I know use low diameter 50lb braid straight through with up to 5oz lead with no probs.

Obviously on a FS reel - considering it myself for next year.....

i use 30lbs (for lighter stuff, flounder bass etc) and 50lbs straight through for ray and conger etc. never had a crack off using 6oz leads (for the 50lbs stuff)

cheers lads. over thumping or can you put a swing into cast?

IF using it straight through i advise the use of a finger stall, it will save some pain if things go wrong

But how do you use a finger stall with a multiplier?

erm.....i think it was for an F/S :? :?

you can swing it a bit, but braid will load the rod quicker than mono so go easy to start and work up untill you find a happy medium.

a finger gaurd would be a good idea alright i just use a black rubber glove the with other fingers cut out

great stuff lads thanks. usually opted for high breakin strain/ low diameter line for similar jobs.

braid scares the s*** out of me

I've been using 30lb power pro straight through to weights between 2 and 4 ounces. All casts are over the head off the ground, with a finger stall. Have not tried 5 ozs myself. Normally use this gear on a long rod with 10 foot long traces and am looking to create or take advantage of any movement.

The braid accentuates the lifting of the line in the swell which may or may not be a good thing. Fish can probably also feel the backbone of the rod tip sooner. I prefer to use a quiver tipped boat rod with a home made reducer to increase the handle length.

cheers Cooke. i get what you're saying. thanks. funny that you hav resorted to using soft-tipped boatrod! would you not get a rod made?

I thought the Rule of thumb was always to have a Mono Shockleader to allow a bit of stretch during the Cast? Surely using Braid straight through allows for no stretch and makes the cast feel very tight? Plus there's a safety issue... Apparantly braid can cut you to the bone? :?

I use berkley whiplash 50 lb and an aerialised otg, ive never had any problems yet....

I use a Grauvell telescopic boat rod which with the extended handle comes out at over 4.5 metres. It handles 2-7oz sinkers.

The same rod can take a set of match quivers that are about a metre long. I haven't managed to get these yet but I know Heiko uses them from the boats and recommends them.

have you used flyers on braid?

Braid

At the moment i am using 20lb power pro braid without a shock leader casting up to 6oz weights and have yet to have a crack off, i will admit i am not doing a full pendulum cast but still get a lot of power into the cast and it goes a long way. I started using braid with a shock leader and found i was getting a lot of crack offs on power casts i think the reason for this was that the leader knot was dragging across the braid and taking coils with it. I tried a number of things to stop this like reducing the height of the braid on the reel but it still happened and i was bursting rings off my rods. So out of sheer frustration i started casting without the shock leader i started very gingerly at first expecting a crack off but now cast quiet confidently. Another plus to braid a lot of lads don't realize when fishing snaggy ground you have immediate contact with your lead so you are less likely to pull it into a snag.

Very interesting thread boys. I might try some 30lb Power pro straight through this weekend and see how I go. I find the 20lb stuff very thin. Paul are you casting an FS or M :?: I would imagine that 20lb on Mulitplier would coil and birdie quite a bit, unless the wind was at your back. :?:

think Paul is a fixed spool man Mac? personally i would never use braid on a multiplier ever again ever ever(sorry Donal!). Donal from site uses it on multiplier, don't know if he uses mono at all?! i never had a birdie with it but cut me thumbs on retrieve over sand really bad. that was with whiplash.
