What type of headlight?

I'm goign to but a new headlight at lunch, not sure weather to for a normal one or a re-chargeable type, can anyone offer advice? Are re-chargeable types better/cheaper?

I will be buying it in the waterford area.

Got a new one there about a week ago. the rechargable ones are more expensive.

I think you will be grand with a cheap enough one. I dont know if there is any maxol garages beside but they are doing them for £6. cany beat that

Argos do an Energiser led light with batteries for about £8 and they are a good light as i us one myself.

FWIW I dont like rechargeable lights, you decide you want to go fishing, buy your bait, tackle rush home and oh feck....batteries flat.... :evil:

I use a Silva L1 which operates off a 3 watt luxeon LED and gives more than enough light for what I want, its also very reasonable on battery life. Of course, if battery cost is an issue, use rechargeable batteries. You can always buy a pack of normal ones for impromptu fishing trips

Thanks lads. Ive had a rechargable light before and it was a problem when I wanted to go on an impromptu fishing trip as the light was never charged.

the silva is a good one. very light too- great with just the small battery pack as you would hardly know it was there.

This also has a 3 led mode for baiting up. Nice headlight. The light does rotate but this connection is crap. I replaced mine with a very small bolt and nut and it does the job perfectly.

go for the rechargable thirty, the cheapest is always the dearest,
bought mine over ten yrs ago stillas efficient as day one all you have to do is plug it in after every session, no batteries, no carrying spares :D

There again what cost do you put on safety, when fishing dangerous rock marks etc.

I spend a lot of time outdoors and have taken part in expeditions around the world. I use a Petzl 3 LED head tourch. It takes 3 AAA batteries and they last a long long time! They are contained in a very small waterproof housing that sits at the back of your head. The light from the tourch is great and its very compact. Very little if anything goes wrong with them and they are a tough little piece of kit! I think they retail at around €40 but you might be able to source them cheaper on the net. I have had mine years now and I swear by it! Don't confuse this with a standard Petzl head lamp.

i can recommend the speleo night raider, they are around £100, although some of the speleo , tiga, and samalites are better and dearer

after a couple of outting's with mine it is really starting to annoy me the straps keep coming off.

I have a Silva L1 which I bought on seeing petekd's. It replaced my old Petzl Miyolite XP which got nicked.

At 100 Euro's it is an excellent headlamp for the money. The Petzl which comes with 3 LEDs and a Halogen costs around 50 Euro is also very good lamp for baiting up, but it isn't in the same league as the Silva when you're looking into the suds. I've seen people with Tigas on the beach and granted they have a great light output, but I can't see how they justify the extra cost (3 or 4 times as much?).

Basically get the Silva. Trust me, you won't be sorry.

Gotta get me one of these headlamps, preferabely a reasonably priced rechargable, i don't get it when people complain about them not being charged for sudden fishing trips, whos fault is that? Simply recharge it when you return from your previous one. :roll: Hairy gave me a wee led headlamp he got free from somewhere and its grand, starting to fade a bit now but it has done the job a couple of times anyway.

The discipline of charging or not isn't the issue. My own experience is that when I've charged rechargeable batteries up they don't seem to hold their charge very well if stored for an extended period of time between trips. I think storage temperature might have something to do with it. You then find that once you get to the beach you're only getting an hour or two out of them and then they can go without warning. I now use normal batteries exclusively and keep a spare pack in the box.

On a related footnote, the Silva I mentioned earlier comes with an external battery pack that takes 4 C batteries. I've been told by someone who has had one for a while that you can get about 2 months worth of trips out of one set of these (and this guy is out a lot!).

Hi, I have the Samalite, both the head light and Base light with the extendable floodlight attachment and can't fault either of them for light. The base light is fantastic also as a torch if needed. 8)

I have a back problem and really need alot of light for safety purposes. I did have a smaller headlight, if I can remember it was a shakespere one, that did let me down one evening when on a rock mark. The batteries faded to none existant and I basically had to crawl on my hands back to the car for the fear of falling. It wasn't nice. :cry: I sent off for the Samilites the next day and haven't looked back since. They are quite expensive but I feel worth it for piece of mind.
