Lure fishing for flounder.

Tue Jul 31, 2012 8:40 am

Just wondering if any of you folks have tried lure fishing for flounder with any success? Just looking at a blog on it and seems like it could be effective. Jelly's seem to do the trick. Could be some good sport trying it out.

There was a guy on here last year I think you posted up some catch reports (with some video's) doing it, with soft jellies. I think he was on a river as well in wicklow/greystones I believe.

Arklow it was, and it can be very effective. Use 1.5g - 3.0g lead heads and the micro Illex or MegaBass Xlayers soft plastics.

I thought i was the only one who met those guys. I remember a few years ago i was fishing along a canal for Pike when this oul lad came over laughing saying that i would catch nothing there except shopping trollies, 30 seconds later i hooked a nice Pike of 6lbs, i can still see the shock on his face as the fish surfaced. Next day i went back to the same spot and you guessed it, the oul lad was there fishing away :D .

I love stories like that. I was fishing a while ago on a stretch of river and was told I catch nothing but a cold, hour later had 2 flounder so was smiling away for the rest of the day.

I see you found my flounder report, there are a few more here http://www.lurefish-ireland.com/search/label/flounder, all I'll say is get out there and try it. They really are good fun to catch on ultra light gear and what I particularly like about targeting them in this way, is that you rarely catch a fish that isn’t lip hooked, a welcome change from the bait fishing days.

Its great sport lure fishing for flounder, but has to be very light gear, 4-8lb brain 3-4lb fluorocarbon leader 2g jig head size 4.
The sp below is a 5.5cm grub by Jaxon. Like Dave said 99% of the time they are lip hooked which is great.

Good luck with it...

I'm not too sure who stocks Jaxon products over here but I know Fishing Mart stocks a lot of their range. However I wouldn't get too caught up on specific lure brands particularly for flounder fishing, personally I use a range of different brands of lures but its really colour and sizes that matters rather than the name on the packet. Sometimes you'll find that one particular colour will significantly out fish others, so its worth carrying a range of colours and sizes. Have a look at AGM Fishing, they're great for inexpensive soft plastics and jig heads. For flounder I normally fish 1.5" - 2.5" ish curl-tailed /paddle-tailed soft plastics with 1-3g jig heads and a similarly light rod/reel set-up. None of this is set in stone though, I mean we've caught flounder on mepps and other metal lures too, just find a suitable mark and see what works. I know a lot of guys in the UK have been catching flounder with various scented lures such as Gulp Sandworms and marukyu power isome, so they might be worth trying also.
