Just a wee warning to anyone thinking about fishing around the Belfast harbour/ port area for mullet, or anything else for that matter, The harbour police are clamping down on anglers and/or bait diggers using the foreshore or area within the port, meaning that a £30.00 pound fixed penalty will be issued to anyone caught. Its in the byelaws for the harbour that angling is prohibited and theres enough signage about unauthorised use so no arguing with it (which wouldn't be a good idea as they have already confiscated gear as well)
The reason I know this is that we were approached by the harbour police and details noted for fishing there last night for mullet at a spot that a few other forum members know. I already knew about the no fishing rule but thought we'd be safe enough outside the shipping area
The clampdown came as a result of careless anglers fishing of a disused wooden jetty at the harbour entrance lighting a fire which got a bit out of hand

and thanks to these prats a good mark has been lost

these guys are currently awaiting a court apperance but now we're all tarred with the same brush.

Was funny though watching you just get out to the hot spot, getting a phone call from us and having to walk all the way back, after the charming Harbour police man gave us the good news!!

To be honest i thought Davy was taking the pee when he phoned just to get me to walk the whole way back in and say he was joking.Wish he was.
Plenty of other spots i suppose but on its day up there was excellent.
Will just have to torture the Inler now.

How far around the shore does the ban apply?
I would assume that it stops at the security hut at the Ikea end of Airport Road. What about the road that runs off Airport Road past Kinnegar?

No signs at the army barracks to say No Fishing or anything about it being Harbour land. Cant see a problem there unless the army block the road. Which they do sometimes if there is a security threat and stop access to the foreshore.

I've checked the Harbour Commissioner Website.
It looks as if the boundary of the estate is the breakwater to the East of the wee white shell beach.

same old story as always, one idiot spoils it for all of us

can anyone post a link to the actual bye laws from whatever site it came off as i'd hate to get nailed for the £30. i dig down there as it's handy for me living in belfast, but i've never seen any signs that say anything to the contrary

. hopefully this means i'd be ok at my spot as i know the old wooden jetty and we're not near it but a clearer defenition would be handy.

Al we werent near the jetty.
We were at the sewer pipe.
Also heard that there is talk of bait digging being stopped up there because of the bird life that feed on the worms.

On a positive note the Cop said he would keep an eye out for the people who have been netting mullet at the back of Vic Park...
He seemed quite disgusted when i told him what was happening...

I phoned the Harbour Police this morning to find out exactly what the craic is once and for all.
The outcome was that the Harbour Police guy i was talking too wasnt really sure himself
He said Technically there was no fishing there but couldnt tell me were the no fishing zone started

As for the parking issue, that went pretty much the same.He said it was okay to park there during the day but not at night.Thought about asking what time they classed at night but thought better of it.
Basically he said it depended who was on duty which is a lot of help
So now im even more confused.
As for fishing the Inler River make sure you get your ticket cause they will be checking.
