Where does everybody get their weights?

Hi lads,I wasnt to sure where this belongs but Im just wondering where does everybody get their fishing weights? Do you make them or buy them? Im asking this because in tackle shops lead weights are pretty expensive and it costs a fortune if you are fishing snaggy marks. Any help is apreciated, cheers Ian

I normally buy them. I have fished a few home made weights from the bottom so I guess some people make them as well. If the mark is snaggy might be good to use floaters or even the ones with clips. If it still doesn't work maybe a new mark is the answer.

I have to pick some weights up in a tackle shop this week myself ( Prob the one in smithfield ) I think I have to get some 150g weights. Any ideas how much these cost???

make them myself,picked up moulds for weights from 1oz to 8oz,and was lucky to have blagged around about a ton of lead from sites before the resession a good mould to get is a ajustimould which makes weights from 4oz to 8oz,also have a mould that makes grip weights 5oz(150gm) and 6oz(175gm) bought them in heaneys hardware claremorris,both cost about twenty euros.

i make them myself,pretty easy to do,all you need is a mould and a old saucepan and a ladle and a snips for cutting the lead and a gas ring for heating the lead
i got a lot of lead on building sites,if you know any one that works at roofing they would pick up lots for you
for the wire i use wire from the outside of steel armoured cable also found on the building sites,materials are free if you can locate them

one thing about working with lead is the fumes from it is toxic,If you are going to melt lead do it outside if possible or in a well ventilated area. and use a mask

lead melts at 327.46 °C or 621.43 °F so welding gloves are advisable

if you fish rough ground a lot like i do you wont mind the tackle losses as much,just reach in to the bag and grab another one

Grand job. I just needed a rough idea of how much they are likely to be. Ill definitely look into making my own in the future though.

would a barbeque give out anof heat to melt lead as i have a mould but didnt try it yet

just a word of caution.... if you have molten lead and get a splash of cold water/liquid in it.... it tends to splash out...so a good face mask is not a bad idea......

should work but i think it might to slow melting the lead,you might need some thing to fan the coals to keep the heat up

keep asking around some one will know some one that works in the buildings you could also price the local hardware to see how much a roll of lead is,it still might be cheaper then buying from the tackle shops
also try some of the local tyre shops they use lead to balance the wheels they might have some old ones

get some egg cartons and use quick drying cement, full up the egg spaces and add some wire, not sure of the weight of each one, not reconmended for power casting but for rough ground thay work a treat

i use them as rotten bottom weights, they usually get stuck and i lose them

I use the home made spoonies alot, great for feathers and calm waters no use for grip really, my new weight of choice is pyramids, I made few with a tub of compacted sand, indent the sand with an original, pop in some wire shaped like a paper clip, pour lead and bobs your sandy weights uncle, I get scrap lead off a friend

rorys sell the moulds for 30 euro thay ajust from 4oz-8oz very handy to have saves u paying 1.50 a pop for 1 5oz

I bought the gemini system 100 box with the mould in the waterford angling and outdoor center, it included long and short tail wires and enough parts to make up lots of nose cones( where the grip wires are). the best thing i find about these leads is that it is easy to change the nose cones ( they just screw on and off) meaning that you can change to different lenght and strength grip wires as conditions dictate, you can also use plain non grip nose cones.I find the best thing to do is to preheat the mould by using one of those small handheld blowtorches ( not too much as that would warp the mould) this ensures that there will be no gaps in the lead. I found that for about 18-20 euro worth of lead from my local hardware i can make about 50-60 euro worth of lead weights i.e. about 30 150 g leads (which in the shops are about 1.50 each). of course the number of leads will be less if i make say 200g sinkers.
