Ok gentlemen if you were dumped on a deserted island and could only choose one of the two baits which would it be?
Lug hands down for me, maybe not as much visual attraction but the scent is a killer. Found it outfishing rag on too many occassions now to think anything other.

Lug all the way. Using Rag on Cork beaches, aside from maddies or whites dangled in the suds on occasion is like taking a wad of notes and throwing them into the sea.

only thing i use rag for is wrasse and being honest if i had lug i would probably have caught the same amount. for bass and codling which are the main species i use lug for rag fails miserably down here although i'm sure in other places the opposite is true

Wouldn't write Rag off totally - especially King Rag. In settled conditions Rag can outfish Lug. My bigger bass from the shore have all fallen to King Rag. I vote King Rag!

If the deserted island was on the south coast then lug. If it was on the east coast rag..........unless it was winter!

i find lugworn to be better, but im to lazy to dig lug so i always use rag because it can be bought if u know what i mean
Wed Aug 15, 2007 5:23 pm
it all depends on what fish are being targeted and what the weather conditions are..
but considering that i cant dig rag this end of the world, i'd presumably have to say lug.. but i'f i'm over the east coast i'd have to say rag.. just one of those things i suppose

i vote lug worm, find it fishes better than rag

Lugworm for me has caught more species than rag... Rag all the way for wrasse, back up smoothie bait but that would be it... Lug the king of worm bait :D

cant comment on this they both have there own merits in different locations and conditions

for me it has to be rag i remember a time you couldnt give lug away in wexford i have caught more fish to rag than i have to lug winter or summer
fintan

On the East coast for me it would have to be RAG, and in calm conditions the rag visualy move more than lug. (Great poll though, also wondered it myself).

Lol gas answers there well if i was stuck id probably pick the lug as it has a better scent and can be dried or gutted and lasts longer than the rag so common sence will prevail as you dont know how long you will be stuck out there for

If I had to take one bait for any species anywhere, it would be "Frozen Black Lug" the best of the bunch is "Blackpool Black Lug" from the UK...it my seem expensive but it is the cheapest in the long run......when all else fails it always seems to do the trick.
BTW....the stuff I get from my supplier is that big that for match fishing over here, one worm would make 3 good size baits.

Looks like we have the east coast lads leaning to rag
You have me fascinated now Tom about the 'Blackpool Black Lug'......although it does sound like a form of vd that you might catch in dodgy seaside resort

I fish mainly the east coast and use mostly Rag but find Lug to be better in the Winter months, but over the space of a year I would use more Rag I suppose.
Have tried that frozen black lug a few times and found it rubbish to be honest, just don't see what the fuss is all about.

Richie,
Frozen Lug possible....but not the stuff I'm talking about mate! this stuff is prized by many top anglers and not easy to get. Those who dont know what they're buying sometimes get mixed up and class it all the same...trust me....if you used this stuff you wouldnt tar all Frozen Black with the same brush.

Hi Tom,
Well this frozen black lug I used a few times came over from Morcambe in England and was €6 for 10 and was told it was used by match anglers mainly for tipping off a bait.It certainly wasn't just ordinary frozen lug.As a matter of interest how many different types of Frozen black lug are there?
Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:48 pm
I hear what your saying.....I too have had FBL from Morecambe and found out later it wasnt the same as I'd had before.....I now get it direct from the digger in Morecambe,as the supplier I used to get it from stopped paying the going rate and started getting his worm from Wales as it was cheaper.
I am sure if you ever used the real stuff you wouldnt say it was rubbish.
Tom.

This is fascinating reading, I only fish in Inishowen, and can honestly say I dont think I have EVER caught with Lug! I would always be armed with Rag for any fishing trip, and then depending on where Im going I would either use Mack, Sandeel or Crab as my back-up!
