What Reel for Bass Rod???

I am in the process of buying a new bass/rock rod what reel would you all recommend?? Multi or Fixed Spool?

I will probably need a fixed spool as I will be using it for feathers, float fishing as well as spinning and lures. Can you get a multi that would be as effective as a fixed spool? Maybe one with Line level would be equally as good?

My head is about to explode thinking about this!!

You're trying to cover quite a wide range of fishing there.

I use a fairly light weight setup with a Shimano Baitrunner Aero GTE 6000B fixed spool reel on my Greys BZe rod. This is the 1-3 oz version of the BZe.

The reel works really well with this rod. It's perfect for light beach/rock fishing and float fishing. Would work for feathers too. The setup is too heavy for proper lure fishing and too light for hauling big fish up cliffs though.

Would getting 2 rods/reels be out of the question? A light spinning rod and f/s reel together with a heavier rock rod or something like the 3/5oz BZe with a small multiplier?

i would stick with the fixed spool.........less hastle if its windy and all that.

Would the Bze 1-3oz be suitable for bass fishing I havent done this before and am not to sure what is required?

Is the Bze good for getting a good fight I really want something with a light tip to feel the fish?

Where did you get your Bze and reel from was it Veals?

That's exactly what I use it for. The limitation with it is that you won't haul in big lumps of weed in heavy weather. Good for flattie fishing too. Also float fishing for bass. The handle is a bit long for extended periods of lure fishing, but at a stretch (literally) you can cast lures and heavier plugs/poppers without too much fuss.

It's excellent. Although I've only had it for about 6 months and haven't had a decent bass on it yet. It will be my main rod for the summer months on Wexford beaches.

Where did you get your Bze and reel from was it Veals?

Got the rod from Southside Angling in Dublin. Still don't trust rods by post.

Would I be better getting two rods as you suggested? I was trying to kill two birds with one stone but I dont want to comprimise the quality by doing so.

Maybe a spinning rod Any suggestions and the Bze 3-5oz for a beachcaster/Bass rod or would it be to heavy?

well, if you are on a budget, i would recommend the leeda quicksilver spin for your spinning rod. great rod for only about 40-50 euro. i would match it to a okuma interceptor 50. excellent reel for an even better price.

as for the bze heavy, there aren't enough good words to describe it. it would be equally at home flinging a 4oz to the horizon as it would be just flicking a 2oz or 3oz. i choose to match mine to a abu Florida mag. if you aren't multi orientated then a medium size beach casting fixed spool works just as well.

I have the Bze 3-5oz and ive caught big bass on it with great sport...U can feel every twitch and head bang the fish throws at you...plus you have the versatility to throw bigger leads and haul in bigger fish...It can cope with pier fishing over rough ground 2 but i wouldnt recommend it 2 bully the lead out of the rocks... Excellent bite detection, i use it for most of my fishing, Because i love to feel the fight a fish has to offer...

Just on that maybe one of you could advise the differences between the 6500 went into a local tackle shop and the guy wasnt able to tell me the differences. I am a novice to Multi but would like to give them a go

Final thought bit of advice would you go for 2 rods?

Bze 1-3oz twinned with a Shimano 5000b GTE for fishing Mackerel, Pollock, Wrasse of the rock either with Feathers, Spinning Float

and

A beachcaster twinned with an Abu 6500 or Penn 525 for the rest

Or do I need three rods lol

to be honest i think the 6500 sits better on the rod than a 525.

i would go for the heavy bze for one rod to do all your beachcasting and feathering etc...

then go for a good spinning rod between 10-11 feet for the lighter end of the things you want to do i.e. float fishing and plugging for the bass.

these two setups will cover everything you said you wanted to do. and a bit more :wink:

so, yes get two rods and make one of them a bze 3-5oz. you wont regret it.

wel to be honest, no it wouldnt really too much fun and anyway, if you want fun with macks just use a feally light spinning rod and a single lure. the leeda quicksilver spin 11ft would be a nice light rod but to be honest it looks like you are expcting too much for one rod. i will put it like this.

Greys bze 3-5oz: feathering, light beachcasting, bass fishing with bait.

quicksilver spin 11ft 30g-60g: spinning, plugging, float fishing and general light fishing usually without bait.

What reel would be best for the Bze Abu 6500?? Which one there are so many!!

If I get into the beachcasting the Bze could become second rod and get a fully fledged beachcaster am I correct?

I think the guys are right. The 1-3oz BZe falls between what you need. I'd go for a heavier rod (like the 3-5oz BZe) and a lighter spinning rod rated at 10-60.

as regards to the bze becoming a second rod to a "propper" beach caster, dont be fooled by the light rating on this rod as it will at a pinch handle general beach work. and will allow you to feel flatties and small fish which is nice.

The Bze 3-5oz it is then and would it pair up perfectly with the Abu6500c3 ct mag ? Would this be better than the Penn 525 Mag Extra?

Does anyone know who stock these locally to me? So I can try before I buy(well look anyway).

What would your weapon of choice be for the lighter end of things? Is it worth spending a bit on this or would the quicksilver be a good buy?

to be honest i would use the abu. the mag just dosent "feel" right on the bze.

seeing as midget is talking about my quicksilver 11', i think i'll have to tell you about its ups and downs..

it is a light rated rod but dont let you put that off.. i have used it in competitions when targeting flatfish, and a good sized flattie does put up a good little fight..

the largest fish i have caught on it was a 8.5lbs pollock, and it handled very nicely, have also caught small thornies up to 4lbs on it... and loads of doggies...

for plugging and spinning there is a very nice action in the top section and will chuck a plug/spinner up to 70yrds easily..

rated up to 2oz i have used an abu6500 c3 ct and cast a 2oz 110 yrds using 15lbs line..

on the down side, the eyes used could be of better quality and the reel seat sometimes sticks.. but other than that i would give it a score of 8/10

I have a mustad viking 116 lite which I use for feathering and bass fishing, when feathering I use it with a Shimano Cardiff left hand multiplier with levelwind ( which I also use on my spinning rod), when bass fishing I use it with an ABU 6500 C3CT, the CT isn't the best for feathering due to having to watch the line lay on the retrieve and the left hand multi is perfect for spinning, plugging and feathering.
Just throwing a few more ideas in there.

I only went to multis about 4 months ago for everything and already I wouldn't go back to FS, in fact I'll be selling my FS stuff soon.
