Inshore boat fishing on Galway Bay

Permanent Linkby Tackleholic on Fri Jul 23, 2010 8:41 pm

Hi folks.
I have been doing some fishing on Galway bay over the past two Summers. My boat isn't too big so have kept it local mostly - north shore between Galway city and Barna majority of the time. With calm conditions I have gone accross to Ballyvaughan and Black head.
I have caught no end of mackeral beyond Mutton Island and the Leveret marker and picked up a few nice pollack near the Black Rock marker. Also had a nice Ballan wrasse at the Black rock marker. Beyond that however, I've caught nothing else!
I have tried bottom fishing a few times on the drift but have lost tackle many times without so much as a bite!
I have been told that the fishing gets better the further west towards Connemara ya go. Is this true? Or are there other species closer to Galway city? If so, where are they and how do I catch them?!!
Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Try the inner bay opposite Eddy Island. If you have a fish finder you should be able to locate a hole which is well worth anchoring up and fishing. Ive had good tope there in the past and a monkfish of 50lb.......you could also try anchoring up outside silverstrand......good for flatties.....

Not sure if this will help but I only bottom fish on anchor for the very reason that bottom fishing on the drift can be costly on tackle.
If you must fish on the drift, use a paternoster rig (hook above the weight), drop it to the bottom and wind in a few turns. I've used this rig, baited with frozen sandeel or fresh mackeral strips (when available) around Cork Harbour to catch cod, whiting, pollock and coalfish.
Even with the paternoster, you'll still lose gear but a fishfinder will help keep it to a minimum.
