Any beginner’s tips for lure fishing or bottom fishing for bass in Cork. I live in the city so cork harbour / east Cork areas. how does the moon, tides, wind fair for bass fishing? what lures work well? Is crab the best for bottom fishing? any advice please? What areas are fish being caught now?

Hi Bmuprhy

People will not share marks where bass are showing owing to the potential for poachers and people who do not return fish turning up and raping the marks.
No offence intended, its just how it is...

Some of the lads here - Donal comes to mind - live locally and will doubtless give you good information.

Crab is often seen as the best bass bait, especially from shore but they can be caught on pretty much anything else - mackerel, sandeel, lugworm. Try using fresh bait as it makes a big difference. If you can dig or collect it yourself, all the better.

the general rules are

1) decent but not massive surf
2) dusk or dawn, i.e. dark
3) no moon or small moon (not full moon)
4) change in the weather happening
5) coming tide
6) mixed shoreline, some rocks etc.

The only caveat is that Ireland's record bass was caught in full daylight, on an ebbing tide, on a flat sand beach, in a low surf... so there you go!

My suggestion is that you pick a mark, survey it at low water, and fish it regularly, across a variety of conditions and keep a log book and record the results. Over time you will see patterns emerge, and the truth is each mark is different and winter storms will change it every year.

Hope this helps...

Hi Bmurphy
How're you getting on with getting your bass at the moment- have you landed one??
Reading your initial question I'm in the same boat as yourself about trying to land one.... with no success!
Cheers
Eoin

Back to the bass again. Have been out 4 times over the past few weeks, hooked one fish haven't landed any yet this year. Looking for high water marks around Cork Harbour Kinsale or east Cork. PMs welcome for spinning /lure fishing if possible.

Why not try the new park at haulbowline ,I’d bet that’s a cracking spot
