Lake Garda

Postby ecleary » Sat Aug 05, 2017 5:06 pm

Just back from Lake Garda in Italy. We were camped beside a very shallow part of the lake so lots of wading in 2 to 3 feet of crystal clear water casting a few spinners and surface lures. Highlight was catching bass ( largemouth I think) on surface lures around the reeds; super sport fish and a first on both counts for me. The area also had a big head of chub that used to feed on fry in the shallows so provided a plenty of sport on light tackle. I had to scale up the lures to avoid them in the end. I saw some nice trout there too in urban areas, but never got a chance to target them. Didn't see any pike or perch; except for resturant menus. If I go there again I'd definitely bring the fly rod for the shallow water fishing. No pics unfortunately as didn't want to drop the phone in water

I know it's not a freshwater forum but nice to hear that wee report ecleary.. Wouldn't have had a clue what species to expect from lake Garda but there you go.. sounded like some decent fishing 8) What size were the fish you were catching? Any pics??
Are those largemouth bass introduced from the States? Would any of those other species have been introduced also, that you know of..? And what sort of trout are you talking about?

Here's a couple of pics from a recent fly fishing trip to Iceland..
10lb 4oz brown trout
4lb char

Cheers chuckaroo , two fantastic looking fish there.

there is some decent fishing there from what I saw. Worth a chuck if there on holidays. I saw a good few local guys fishing lures ; lrf/ street fishing style.

I believe the largemouth bass were introduced from the states and I've seen some pics on internet of the USA style bass tournament fishing there. Fish I caught were on the small side ; 2 - 3lb but good sport all the same.

The are a few different species of trout there from what I've read. I saw one up close with markings I haven't seen before; definitely Wasn't a brownie or rainbow.

cool, thanks.
Was it maybe a brook trout or lake trout? They must have been intouduced too then.
Sounds like a lot of introduced species unfortunately..
Still, I'd have a throw for the bass :)
