I caught my first ever fish on a surface lure last week on holidays in the med so I can recommend it as a very exciting way to fish. I caught on a surface lure which is seemingly very effective for Bass -an IMA Salt Skimmer. It casts incredibly far,but it needs relatively calm seas if it's very choppy it kills the action

Heard the old storm chug bugs are great for this, I bought 5 of them relatively cheap online.

Hoping I might get something this year

You cant go wrong with the Lucky Craft Sammy 115 which has a walk the dog action or in choppier conditions the Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 which also has a walk the dog action but can also be used as a popper. Nailed 5 in Dingle last week on a Sammy.
Have used the Salt Skimmer and caught but don't like the action, In my view over rated
