New member from N. Ireland travelling to clonakilty cork ???

Postby stefand » Mon May 15, 2017 9:59 pm

Hi guys,
I am travelling down to clonakilty, it will be my first time being down any further than Dublin. My wife and I are staying in a wee B and B......and I'm packing the fishing rods.

My background is salmon angling and trout but I'll be packing my boat fishing gear/spinning gear rather than dragging my wife along the river bank.

My question is where should I fish, what tactics and what species.

I hurt want a bit of sport in the sun if we're lucky. We leave 2 weeks from today.

We tried charters and were getting quoted some big figures, since it's just me and the wife....it just doesn't work.

All help is greatly appreciated thsnks

Hi Stefand

Firstly, if you let the charter skippers know that there are only two of you, they will often be able to offer you two seats, for example where a boat is booked for 8 but the party will accept two more and save €100 by doing so... Mark Gannon would be based locally and have an excellent reputation. Union Hall has some good boats too.

Whilst the information is a bit old, you can peruse more of the easily accessed marks here: http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/shore%20-%20cork%20-%20south.htm

My own personal favourite is Barley Cove, fishing off the rocks to the east, into the channel that runs out from the beach. Giltheads are a great fish for sport and eating and they have colonised almost all of the estuaries in West Cork, with fish to 5 lbs (2 kilos) available on many of the marks. They like eel grass beds in particular...

Hope this helps, and don't forget to post a few reports and some pictures ;0)

In case the weather isn't great http://www.wildatlanticway.com/director ... oCpLXw_wcB

If you go rock fishing wear a PFD as we can get big rogue waves down here.

Small self drive boats available just up the road in Courtmacsherry. Going to try one this summer myself. Graham Pullen of the Totally Awesome Fishing Show on YouTube goes to Courtmac a lot.

Shore marks for the country on one map http://swordsanglingcentre.com/fishing- ... in-ireland

More maps and shore marks in addition to Kierans.

From Clon you can get to Cork City to do other stuff in less than an hour if the weather isn't great.

Lough Hyne is just outside Skibbereen and the walk up hill to the west is a must.

Head to Baltimore and get a ferry to Sherkin or Cape Clear or walk to the Beacon.

Head to Brow, Mizen, 3 Castles,Lambs heads for views and some unexplored angling.

They advertise half day self-drive boat. Some nice fishing in the channel for flounder and bass with the chance of a Gilthead bream. Remember its catch and release until July 1ST. for bass. Fresh crab and lug are your best baits. Bass have been taken here on lures also.
The pier will have a few mullet hanging around it.

The estuary at Ring (Clonakilty) will have bass, flounder, golden grey mullet and gilthead bream. A 2kg Gilthead was taken in the estuary 2 weeks ago. Golder grey mullet are taken on maddies in close
You can dig lug and maddies to the left of the pier. Search the weed to the right of the pier for crab

Caught these there last Friday fishing next to the pier, the flounder 45cm and 1kg

Rosscarbery, the Warren beach, will turn up the same species as above. Fish to the right hand side of the beach.
Up at the main road by the hotel for mullet

Just read the ISFC reports for the last few years to what is been caught in these places. Plenty of background in the photos http://irish-trophy-fish.com/annual-reports/

Dan at The Halfway can supply fresh crab if you contact him in advance 00353863357334. He’ll give you a heads up on what is happening down that way https://www.tackledirectireland.ie/index.php

Guys thank you so much for your replies, I think I'll bring my life jackets with me from my boat. It's a very good point about the waves and my wife can't swim.

Never heard of giltheads.

I'm going to read over the replies later and post some more information about what tackle and rigs I have. I am a novice when it comes to sea angling.

Thanks a million so greatly appreciated

Hi guys sorry for the late response unbelievably busy with work trying to get everything finished before we go away next Sunday.

What are the tactics to use? I'd love to catch sea trout if possible which I would release of course.

What bait? Is mackerel strip a good all rounder? I have a good few in the freezer.

What rigs for bait fishing?

I have many sand eel like rapala lures, cheapos from china but I use them in dirty water here for salmon when the fly doesn't suit.

I also bought a load of plastic jelly shad type lures, supposed to be able to rig them weedless and fish em through kelp.

I get off next Tuesday and will enquiry about boats! Can't wait!
