A follow angler was telling me he got a few cod from a usual winter spot in Cork, myself I tough it was a bit early but others I've spoken to around waterford basically confirm the same, anybody else hear or catch them yet?

I'd would be expecting to be getting a few off the East Cork beaches from now on but they would be under the 2lb

The famous Chesil Beach in Dorset is stuffed with them which isn't entirely seasonal so wouldn't surprise me. Got a 4.5 lber there last weekend, can't UL photo sadly.

I had them last year to 43cm the second week of October in Louth, just a little over a pound, as far as a chill goes, the water isn't even nearly cold enough for a good run of seasoned codling. Donal knows cod and has the seasonal patterns nailed for that area. 2lbers would be a result anywhere at the minute. A session wouldn't be that busy but might be a nice change from whatever else you've been chasing. Personally, I fish all year round, salt and fresh, fly, lure and ledgering and hands down winter fishing is what I love most. Crispy weather, juicy peelers, hot coffee and a road trip. Can't beat it.

This time last year the cod season kicked off here (east cork) in the harbour, and a great season it was too.

I know it was a pretty poor summer, are we going to bypass Autumn and go straight to winter!?

These 2 lads are what we call kelp cod. They are caught by boat anglers on the inshore reefs they feed mainly on crab, squat lobster and brittle star.
As I said above, Tuesday was the first onshore breeze we've had down this way in a while. The boys decides that it was time to hit the beaches for a change of diet, a bit of lug or peeler crab stirred up in the surf would be nice
I've seen this happen before and I was waiting for them

I love it when a plan comes together
When they were filleted their skin was a dark brown from their diet and the surroundings they came from.
I don't like to see photos of fish in the kitchen but this might explain what I'm posting about.
