First kayak purchase - please advise

Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:18 pm

Hi guys.

I'm in the market for my first kayak.

I obviously generally sea fish but would also like the same kayak for occasional piking trips on lakes and/or possibly rivers.

My budget is about €600 therefore I'm obviously okay with having to purchase a second hand kayak.

If anyone could advise me on some good kayak makes & models to purchase that would be great please.

I think another good thing to know would be any particular kayak makes and models to avoid please.

I'd love it if the kayak came with pre-installed rod holders too if that's not asking for too much?

Yours hopefully & faithfully,
John D.

John you could buy a perception freedom brand new for that price, going 2nd hand impersonally would go for a ocean prowler 13 or a wilderness system ride 135 two great kayaks

I bought a prowler 13 from I-Canoe in Ballyfermot on sale for €600, not sure if they have any left at that price but worth giving them a call anyway.

Good video - kayaking looks like a great way to fish but I guessing you'd need to budget for at least another 300 or so quid on radio, PFD, wet/dry suit, flares, etc if fishing at sea

Your right safety should always be a priority. Different people will use different equipment. When I first started out I had a wetsuit, PFD and my kayak, I never travelled far at first but as time went on I got more confident. I now tend to fish through out the year so a drysuit was next followed by a VHF, GPS, flares, Personal locator beacon, safety light and now even carry a small dry box with a space blanket, hand warmers, flint, chocolate, spare batteries, flares etc. This can all cost a mass amount of money and the list is never ending. It can be daunting at first but get yourself out there and enjoy yourself. If I can help in any way give me a shout.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the info, videos and tips - much appreciated!

Are there any kayaks I should avoid at all costs?
