Could I ask anyone who's caught a good fish to take a photo of the angler holding the fish. We need good clear photos of anglers with fish for the Irish Anglers Digest each month. I said already that the magazine would sponsor the fish of the month but I'm sorry to say this is no longer the case. Can I remind everyone that John at Waterford Angling and Outdoor is putting up a prize for the most species caught in the month of January. I have attached the 2015 species hunt card for anyone to download as the one on the IFSA website seems to be downloading incorrectly. Don't forget to get your IFSA number sorted asap as I won't be accepting entries without the number after the 31st January.
Congratulations to Dean Quigley on winning fish of the year with his smooth hound. Keep the entries coming.
Pete.

Hi Everyone.
January was a good month for the species hunt, we have over 30 anglers signed up already and we're well up on last years numbers.
We had 25 different species sent in this month mostly made up of all your expected winter species of Codling, Whiting, Coalfish and all the Rockling.
A few fish worth a mention are Anthony Foley's Flounder of 39cm, Gary McCurry's Sea Trout of 53cm, Joe Duggan's 5 Bearded Rockling of 25cm and Denis Morley's Common Blenny of 17cm. However, we had 3 new record fish sent in, Pete Atkins with a codling of 54cm, Dean Quigley had a Coalfish of 56cm and Chris O Sullivan had an impressive Turbot of 33cm. All three fish were great catches and it's hard to pick one over the other so the 3 lads will share the January fish of the month.
Leader of the Species Hunt after one month is Gary McCurry with 13 species and a score of 1183 points. For his efforts Gary wins the prize for most species caught in January from Waterford Angling and Outdoor.

Just a word on identifying each species, if you're finding it hard to tell the different species apart just take as many photos as you can and send them all in. Another big help is to try to use a camera which produces a image of at least 1MB. Also if anyone wants to claim a Short Spined Sea Scorpion they MUST send in a photo of the under side of the head clearly showing the gill membrane not attached to the belly of the fish.

Don't forget that all entries from now on must have a 2015 IFSA number.
Best of luck to everyone and tight lines.
Pete.

February '15 update

After two months of the species hunt we have over 30 different species along with 8 new records caught.
The leader at the end of February is Chris O Sullivan from Tralee Bay SAC with 13 species and a score of 1242. The overall standing can be viewed on the IFSA website by following the species hunt links.
Although February can be a tough month for shore angling there were 5 new records confirmed.
First up is Dean Quigley with a Poor Cod of 25cm followed by Declan Walsh with a 5 Bearded Rockling 27cm and Terry O' Donovan caught a 18cm Long Spined Sea Scorpion. Derek Kenrick set two new records, a fine cod of 59cm and he wins the fish of the month for his huge 37cm Shore Rockling.
Don't forget if you catch a good fish please get a few photos of yourself holding the fish and send them into me.
Tight lines.
Pete.

Hi everyone.
March was a month of mad weather, well done to all the anglers who braved the high winds and rain and sent in their entries.
Leading the species hunt after three months is Terry O Donovan with 15 species and 1382 points and the leader of the junior section is Stephen Birney with 8 species and 728 points.
A couple of fish worth a quick mention were Terry O Donovan with a 50cm River Eel, Dean Quigley with a 26cm 5 bearded rockling and Anthony Foley with a 81cm Conger Eel.
Fish of the month goes to Tracey Whelan with a 50cm Bass, great catch and well done. Now that the summer is nearly upon us I expect to see the start of a whole new range of species, so far 30 species have been recorded by 35 registered anglers and we also have 6 junior anglers. I would to ask everyone to spread the word and encourage fellow anglers to give the species hunting a craic, you will be surprised how much fun you'll have.
Pete.

Hi everyone.
The Species Hunt is really up and running now with over 75 fish sent during April. Leading the way at the end of April is Derek Kenrick with 17 species and 1730 points, the Junior section has Eoin Foley out in front with 10 species and 940 points. After the first four months we have 39 species confirmed and a total of 11 new Species Hunt record fish.
There was some great fish caught in April, we start off with the super star match angling duo of Joe Byrne and Mike Curtin with two Bass of 68cm and 63cm. Next we have Nikki Foley with a fine Short Spined Sea Scorpion of 23cm, not sure what it is about this species but the lady anglers dominate the catches relating to these fish.
Next is Derek Kenrick with a string of fish that other anglers could only dream of. First is an Undulate Ray of 81cm followed by a Sting Ray of 116cm, next a Thornback Ray of 85cm a new Species Hunt record. But to cap it off he caught a Tope of 157cm a new Species Hunt record at over 40lb would make it an Irish Specimen fish as well.
As good as all the above fish are the fish of the month for April goes to Stephen O Donovan with a 137cm Sting Ray and a new Species Hunt Record, a massive fish well in excess of 50lb making it an Irish Specimen fish also.
We are now starting to move onto the summer species now so keep sending in your entries and tight lines.
Pete.
