Hello all. Is there a bass close season for 2018? I know there used to be one from May 15th to June 15th but I believe this was overturned in 2016. Apologies if I have got this wrong.

You are correct, I have checked today. My reason for asking is I booked a holiday from the 9th to the 18th of June some while ago. I suddenly realised yesterday that these dates coincided with part of the old close season. Thought I may have dropped a massive bollock if the old close season dates have been reinstated this year.....thankfully not!

County Kerry. Been to this area many times, so have come to recognise the marks and at what stages of the tide they fish best at. Hoping they play ball!

It is catch and release all year.

The new rule, which applies to Ireland, states: ‘In recreational fisheries, including from shore, in ICES divisions 4b, 4c, 7a to 7k, only catch-and-release fishing for European seabass shall be allowed. It shall be prohibited to retain on board, relocate, tranship or land European seabass caught in that area.’ The new regulation sees a consistent approach being applied throughout the Irish coastline.

Fantastic policy but how in gods name they intend to enforce it is beyond me.......I have never once seen a fisheries officer in all my years fishing beaches and rock marks up and down the country. I guess we will just have to rely on the decent folks out there to comply.

Ive been questioned twice in a week last year while fishing in Kerry by fisheries to make sure I wasnt keeping bass. Not that I had even seen a bass that week :(

Seen them around Waterville, County Kerry, several times. A new, younger officer started there only a couple of years ago and is very keen and I have been checked by him many times. Great to see. I agree that there aren't enough of them. A good job that the majority of anglers are conservation minded and adhere to the regulations.

Met them on the east Coast (Dublin ) a few times checking for sea trout licences and advising on the rules for bass
