Got a few mackeral last night and one caught my eye ,is this an unusual pattern and has anyone got many of them

its a variant, known locally as a Spanish mackerel

That's not a Spanish mackeral. It's just a bog standard mackeral with slightly different but not uncommon markings

I knew it was a normal mackeral ,just the markings are different ,I've heard about them before just never noticed any ,just wondering how common they were

there a few differant types of mack that can be caught in ireland i thinks its 3 look it up google

What I meant to say was that its called a Spanish mackerel by some locals...
serves me right for not checking what I type! :oops:

We get chub mackerel here

Was in Croatia a few weeks back and the mackerel we were catching for livebaits looked like that. Went fishing on the east coast of Australia several years ago and we used what they call slimey mackerel as livebaits. They were identical to our Mackerel only they had black spots instead of black stripes.

Definitely not a chub mackeral ,the mack I got looks the same as a normal one only it has squiggles instead of bars,that's a chub on the bottom compared to an Atlantic mackeral

The Atlantic mackerel migrates to and from the north Atlantic and into and out of Irish and UK waters, it would be the more commonly caught species. The Atlantic Chub mackerel on the other hand migrates to and from the Mediterranean and would be caught less often

Another species to add to the species count..??

Having said that.. I'd be pretty sure that the two mack in the original picture, at the start of the topic, are both just Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus, with just different markings.

We used to catch these years ago in Wicklow when I was a teenager. They were usually greener looking, really bright green, wider, had different patterns to the normal mackerel you see and were always larger. Weirdly enough you only tended to get one at a time and I dont recall every seeing anyone taking more than that, even when feathers were used. They were well sought after as the fight from one was usually epic. Brings back some memories :-)
