South Coast Cod useful tips
Ok work is taking me to Cork for a week at the end of October and after years of reading about the Cod season on the south Coast ( I am from Louth which is not a cod strong hold!!! ) it is time to give it a good lash.
Anyway I plan on bringing the bait gear with me in the hope of some cod bigger than the usual 6 inchers I am use to and after the year I have had on north East coast I am due a fish or two, maybe!
Any pointers on best rigs to use, bait to use( crab I presume>? ), where to get bait?, and obviously a spot or 2 which might produce some action. I am willing to travel as far as is necessary to accomplish my goal.
Work will only take a couple of hours everyday and is flexible so I can work around the tides.
Thanks all and tight lines.

Re: South Coast Cod
Hi Rocky
I am no expert, but I can put in my two cents worth- I only started targeting cod last winter from Monkstown, so I can share my experience of fishing there.
There was a brilliant thread here by Donal Domeney about the wall, it used to be a sticky. I freely admit I learned pretty much everything I needed from it.
- Fishes best either side of low water. Weaker tides best, as you will be able to fish longer either side of slack water.
- It is very snaggy, so I have only ever used pulley rigs. You will need to use big grip leads also in order to hold bottom (6-7 Oz)
- While the tide is ebbing you need to cast well upstream (uptide) and leave out a lot of line in order to get the gripper to dig in.
- If you have a bite and are reeling in, don't dare stop to see if the fish is still on. Guaranteed to lose your gear. Just reel like f**k
- I have had most success on crab. Frozen will do but fresh is better. You should be able to get frozen crab from Halfway Angling. East Cork Bait and Tackle (Paul Coady) might be able to sort you with fresh crab
- If there are whiting around you will pick them up on lug or even mackerel strips.
- I have only ever fished it at night because that's when I'm free, but I am told that it fishes best during the day.
That's just my experience of the spot, I'm sure others can advise on here, and on other spots in Cork.
EDIT - just seen Donal's post- he has it all there!

Re: South Coast Cod
thanks for the replies lads. Much appreciated
Do you need to have a big cast for all these locations or what will get you on the fish? would 50-75m suffice?

Thats plenty to be on the fish as further you cast in some of these marks you would need an anchor to hold bottom

Re: South Coast Cod
a quick report.
2 sessions both at the Carpets.
1st session 2 hours before low tide till 2 hours after, gale force wind. 1 tiddler caught. a few other small fish caught beside me but nothing of note
2nd session 2 hours before high tide till 2 hours after, tide was higher than I expected, was worried about the losing the car for awhile!! 6 fish caught, 2 keepers with 1 to 4.5lbs, caught an hour before high tide.
An enjoyable couple of sessions had. thanks to all for the help and PM's. Hopefully be back down again around Christmas...

Looking good, then you must also factor in the quality of the angler
