Super Braids

Earlier in the year I was looking to reduce the braid diameter on my spinning reels. I had been using 30lb braid with a diameter of .26mm. I initially tried 15lb BS it was coming in at .18mm. I felt I did not have enough umph to pull through snags when fishing soft plastics.

I was introduced to Strike Wire Extreme: (http://www.strikewire.eu/ ) I have been using it for most of the year. Superb Stuff!
I suppose it would fall into the category of a “Super Braid”. I chose the 9KG breaking strain. With a diameter of .13mm it is much thinner than any of the “normal” braids. When I break a shock leader I am happy to fish away if I don’t have time to tie a new leader.

Anybody else tried out these thin diameter braids?

are you using them out of the boat jim? one thing i found with using braid that thin was i was plauged by wind knots

Using for spinning reels at the mo. I still am using "normal braid" on my multi reels.
I have come to the conclusion that "wind" knots are purely down to line lay on the reel. I find that if I: 1: cast 2:flick the bail arm 3:reel 4: look down to check that there is no loop above the spool 5: reel - I never get wind knots. The only time it happens is if I forget to check that there is no loop above the spool (some times I get too worked up and forget to check ) That loop is going to be a wind knot on the next cast. I have only had a few knots during a long summer and each time it was down to not checking the spool.

The cast I am getting from light plugs and lead heads is incredible on the thin braid.

Hi Jim iv been using Daiwa Tournament 8 Braid 30lb 13.7kg BS/Diameter is 0.16mm for my spinning reels and my light boat rod and reel i find it has less stretch as the 4 strand braid but better casting distance and bite detection. Havent used it on rough ground so i dont know how abrasion resistant it is.

Hi Jim,
yeah I've used Daiwa Tournament 8 braid and Varivas Avani both in 20lb for my Spinning and jigging from the boat and shore. I still have a few spools loaded with Power Pro though as I find this a great back up and cheap as chips to find online. Both the Daiwa and the Varivas are great braids but a bit pricey to be using over heavy cover so thats when I get out the old Power pro.

I've been using Daiwa Tournament 8 strand in 10 and 20lb this year for my lighter and ultralight lure fishing this year and so far I haven't had any problems. That said I'm still using 20lb PowerPro with my heavier bass setup.

The Diawa tournament seems popular. I have not tried it. I am pleased with the strikewire so have not tried any other make.
I cannot think of any real advantage to change over straight away on my multipliers. Here "standard" braid is doing fine for the majority of my angling.I reckon I'll eventually have the thinner braid on all my reels just as soon as I run out of the "normal" stuff.
I am surprised that more guys are not using the super-braids. I think it is a major leap forward.
