Hi All,

I was just wondering is there anywhere in the greater Dublin area where it might be worth trying some lure fishing for Bass? Or is it a case of Bass being so rare that if anyone did know of a decent spot they would keep it to themselves?! The Poolbeg area used to be mentioned in the old days. Although if they exist at Poolbeg, I have always wondered why you wouldn't catch Bass, (at least flat fish) in the Blackrock or Booterstown area for example. However, I've never seen anyone fish there, just bait diggers galore.

So I guess what I'm asking is whether the Wexford area represents the nearest decent spot to Dublin suitable for lure bassing?

Any input would be much appreciated.

All the best

Bass fishing in dublin has been good for me last year but only using lug!
saying that i've seen fine Bass taken on lures and quickly released by the angler!
most of my fishing has been evening nighttime!
many blanks along the way, tide pre fill and on the drop works but the moon phase
has proved to be important along with the wind/weed, water temp.
13 Bass over 12 months of very regular fishing!
more blanks than results. fish the same areas under different conditions over and over to get results.
sometimes i reckon i'm gonna blank but i head out anyway! always learning.
gonna do more lure fishing this year and will keep ye posted on here.

Fair play. I don't suppose you could name a spot where a fella might have a go with lures, (catch and release). Southside would suit me best, but I am prepared to travel anywhere I might have some chance, (public transport I'm afraid). I like the sound of wherever you saw those chaps returning the Bass!! But if you want to keep it to yourself I can of course understand.

Either way thanks for the reply.

Hi Mate,

I can think of 3 off the top of my head that are noted spots but do produce on lures - Red Rock in Sutton & Dollymount to the far right of the beach at the outcrop. They're both northside.

On the southside your best bet is killiney, AMENDED

Not a waste of time at all. I fish mostly in Dublin and Wicklow and can say there are plenty of places to catch Bass, especially around Dublin, but you have to do a fair bit of groundwork at low tide to find some marks and most of the marks I fish are only good at first light or at dusk, so its either a very early start or a late start, maybe thats why you don't see people fishing in some spots  . You'll be surprised where you can catch Bass if you look hard enough.

Do you need to fish off the rocks or is the beach itself worth a bash? I shall try it anyway as soon as I get home, (in the U.K. at the mo). But just confirming if it's rare to catch there or could you bag a few, (over the season) if you put the time in, (catch and release). Finally, what's the best with regard to the tides, I keep hearing first light and dusk are good times to try some lure fishing.

Anyway, sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but it's great to hear there's a possible venue within walking distance!

I would just like to thank all of you who have contacted me regarding the above. After a slow start members have been very helpful, (both directly on the thread and via pm). In fact far more so than I could have hoped or expected especially to a new member.

Thanks again and I hope the fish Gods will reward you!

Looking at this thread i cant help thinking that i would be very dissapointed if i regularly fished these spots.

There is nothing worse than going to one of your regular spots and finding multiple anglers on it(not sure if this spot is fished by many at the moment but i reckon that will change now). Not to mention the pressure on any fish that are in the location even if catch and release is used.

That it the probable outcome of this thread.

I think that if people want to give out specific locations and timings they should do it via pm's.

Im all for helping people get into lure fishing and fishing in general but what positive purpose can divulging this information over the internet serve?
How do we know whether people on this site or guest viewers are poachers or commercials.

As the great striper fisherman Al Bentsen used to say "to many people talk about the what and the where" when discussing the causes of the depletion of the striper stocks in the 80's

i see regular posts asking for locations, my view is "get your own Gold" or send a pm.

A

Well Lurefisher, I can see your point of view and as I mentioned in some of my pm's I know what's it's like to have a personal favourite spot ruined. Perhaps, if you ask the moderator he can have the references to specific venues removed, although this may be against the rules, I'm new to this forum crack.

From a personal, (admittedly selfish perspective) all I can say is that I'm glad that not all forum members have the same attitude as you. I agree that it might have been better to pm me when providing exact details. However, I don't recall receiving any pm's from you, which is of course to quote Bobby Brown and Britney Spears, your prerogative.

But I don't think any angler should be criticised for trying to help another, quite the contrary they should be applauded. Some members even offered to meet up with me, which really surprised me. It would be sad to see, (in my opinion) the worst aspect of U.K. carp fishing i.e., the 'secret squirrel' mentality taking hold throughout angling in general.

Anyway, that’s my view; do with it as you will.

There're rights and wrongs to either side of that debate. I don't think it'll ever be resolved.

Hey Divisadero

For someone new to this forum crack you are doing very well  although i dont see where britney spears or bobby brown come into a fishing forum.

If you read my post again i didnt criticise anyone for assisting another possible angler but merely the manner in which the assistance was delivered and not how it was received by you(which was quite gracious btw).

Again my attitude is not against helping others, not at all, unlike yours which you admit is selfish.

Im not surprised that a couple of guys offered to even meet up with you and show you some spots. There are many good guys using this forum with helpful insights. for example

Feel free to pm me anytime and i will give you all the assitance that i can. Perhaps i can help fast track you even further.

Fair enough Lure fisher. One thing though, I personally have often passed on information in the past, so let's not take my selfish comment as a generalisation!!

Anyway, thanks for the welcome and the offer of assistance.

All the very best,

W
