The irish fleet went straight to the scad west of Achill after xmas before the Dutch fleet got back and big landings of clean (unmixed) fish were landed into Killybegs and most vessels are away north for mackerel now. The Dutch factory ships tow on the shoal 24/7 and scatter the fish making them hard to catch

The number one biggest trawler in the world has been off Mayo/donegal most of the winter. Dutch factory ships hammering scad but the worrying thing about that is the massive amounts of seed mackerel that swim with the scad which get picked out and dumped. The Dutch now have big mincing screws for mulching up the discards to conceal the evidence

MARGIRIS UPDATE
The Skipper has learnt that a major joint fishery inspection involving the SFPA, Dutch Coastguard, Irish Navy and Irish Aer Corps has taken place on the Blue Whiting grounds of the west coast of Ireland.

Whilst the SFPA and Irish Navy will not confirm this operation took place, The Skipper has received reports from Irish vessels fishing in the area that several factory trawlers were boarded in the last 24 hours and the Dutch Coastguard vessel "BAREND BIESHEUVEL" was observed close to the "Margiris".

All requests by The Skipper for information from the Irish and Dutch Authorities have met with the same response

"Routine inspections are taking place across all vessels currently fishing in EU waters. We do not comment of individual vessel inspections"

As there has been no notification of any detentions to The Skipper by press release as is normal we can assume that no infringements were detected this time.

The Skipper will continue to highlight issues regarding the EU factory trawler fleet fishing these waters and will be campaigning for an onboard independent observer program such as the one these vessels must undertake when fishing in African, American and Canadian waters

A bit of grandstanding going on!
As was noted above the biggest trawler in the world (and many close to it in size) was fishing off the west coast for most of the winter!

It goes on and on and on.... Have you monitored intense activity like this off Mayo in previous years?

Was also wondering about the dead whales that have turned up off west Mayo recently, could they have been caught up and drowned in huge pair trawls?

hi hugo i have seen a lot of fishing boats of the mayo coast in the last few years but it seems to be getting worse

Does anybody know what the 15 or so trawlers (mostly Russian) fishing at the porcupine bank of the coast of Mayo are fishing for? and are more than likely high grading
