Sea Angling Ireland

Does anyone know if this has affected Galway bay, The mackeral have made themselves very scarce for the last week.

loads of dead fish at creevy pier this morning,im sure they were affected with Red Tide:-(

Is the bloom concentrated close to the shore ? What I am really getting at is how far out are the fish having to go to escape it ? Is it worth following inshore boat angling reports to get an idea of when the fish are heading back in ?

I am getting really fed up not fishing, is there really no point at all ? If I do go out and happen to catch (?) are they really inedible ?

This bloom doesnt seem to have effected East of Malin head, I was out a warrior 165 from Culdaff on Thursday, the sand fishing was slower than normal, but it has been like that all season.
We caught 9 species, Red & Grey Gurnard, Whiting, Ling, Pouting, Plaice, when we went into the rough ground the fishing was frantic, we had easily 25 pollock in less than an hour, along with a few Coalies, and a few Ballans.

Know any good rock marks up there ?

My guess is that they would be ok and I will eat them as long as they look in reasonable condition and don't have gills clogged up with mucus .

Fishing was very, very slow in Spiddal
Wondered what the hell happened, as for last 3 weeks I was finishing either blank or with 2-3 palm sized pollock. Know - I see why. Water in Spiddal was like on loughs - tea like colour. Thought that its because of amount of rain and rivers running to the bay coloured - but it seems to be the algae.
Also while fishing in Sligo noticed surprisingly large patches of dirty foam, seems to fit the picture...

Hello hello , had a plateful of very tasty Macks fresh out of Sligo bay yesterday and am pleased to say no ill effects evident in the 2 of us who ate them . However I also gave some uncooked pieces to the dog and she vomited several times over the next few hours . She has had raw Mac before without problem so this was an unpleasant surprise . I have no idea whether the illness was purely coincidence . She was back on top form by morning .
The Macks were caught from a boat about 1/2 mile offshore . The Red Tide in the area was evident by orange staining on the braid line but strangely there were more and bigger fish around than 3 weeks ago . However Pollack were scarce , even the small ones .... but I did catch a pb of just under 10 lb . That one and 2 others which I kept had absolutely nothing in their stomachs . I guess we returned about another dozen to 2 lb , all of which appeared to be in good condition , so maybe there is hope yet .

Not if you come round to the Clare side of the Bay,the water is still the colour of bad tea, a new flotilla of weed from yesterdays wind has joined the rotting stuff that was already there and it will all be picked up as the tides are rising in size.
No birds around anywhere, no gannets, no terns no razorbills even the gulls cant be bother to lift themselves off the hills.
I went out at first light, every cast of the lure came back clogged with weed, even weedless texas rigged senkos were coming back wrapped in fine silky green weed. I stopped off to try for the elusive mackerel at ' The Flats' between Black Head and Ballyvaughan. You can see from the state of the place that there are not many mackerel being caught as most of the rubbish and litter is now showing signs of age and weathering also thankfully there is not the usual amount of litter for this time of year. The sea was as black as the sky and in about an hour of taking a few photographs and fishing I saw one mackerel caught and that was by me on a full pelt cast that emptied half a spool on a 525 mag.
I spoke to a very accomplished angler this morning a tales are pretty much the same from the south of Clare, so frustrating when good reports are coming in from Kerry which is just a stones throw away.

i tell you this boys .if this bloom can kill lugworms which lives on all kinds of siht i wouldent be putting any fish caught in theses areas near my mouth no matter what any scientist says about it not been harmful to humans. remember mad cow disease? they swore this could not come up the food chain also.as we all evolved from the oceans if its harmful to marine life it cant be healthy for us to eat.

I cannot say yet, I believe the weather will improve tomorrow and be ok Saturday but the wind will pick back up Sunday and start to calm back down Monday afternoon. Wind will be variable from west to south so no real pattern or calm spell is forecast. If things dont get any better I will head off down to Kerry for next weekend.

There is no obligation to keep the fish . I usually release them, as hate cleaning them for the table.
If only weather allows for a paddle and there be a chance to catch anything - I'll propably go next week.
