Hi,
Looking at the species guide a few such as dogfish, gunards and anglerfish says "current IFSC rules require anglers kill all such fish". Just wondering why this is ? I've seen very few people kill dogfish.
ifsc rules and killing species ?

Re: ifsc rules and killing species ?
If you want to claim the specimen you need to kill it so that it can be verified. It's badly worded. They don't want you to dispatch the dogs etc.
List 2010. fish
List 2011: less fish
2012: less fish again,
2013: even less fish.

Would poster please read the rule regarding claiming a specimen fish.
Look here, http://www.irish-trophy-fish.com/, and down load the 2009 book it will tell you what you need to do.
They ask for photos of heads, fins, lateral lines underside of the head for some species send in plenty of photos if you are unsure.
I’ll upgrade the specimen list for the site

Thanks for all the Info. I thought from the wording if you caught one of these fish they wanted it killed for a reason other than claiming a specimen.

Re: ifsc rules and killing species ?
There seems to be a popular misconception that you have to kill a fish to claim it as a specimen, YOU DONT, all you need is for it to be weighed on certified scales and decent photographs taken of identifying features, some species require scale samples, fin clippings etc. for dna proof of species but if you read the requirements in the link as posted by Donal you'll not go far wrong.
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.
