the coil is for wrapping ground bait around it, sort of like a feeder. nice rig you might as well get a trawler while your at it

Lots of small/undersized ones? Anything with that amount of hooks looks dodgy to me. If you cut all but one of the hooks off, filled the feeder and stuck a float further up the line it might be an interesting rig for mullet

The cage is known as a burley cage or at least thats what the Aussies call them and as Brian pointed out they are for holding groundbait. I've never seen one with hooks like that on it before, it kind of reminds me of a rig I've seen used for mullet. I don't know what the rig is called but it basically is a rig of maybe ten or so hooks which is effectively wrapped around a big lump of bread for mullet. It would appear to work along the same principle as that rig you posted, if you have enough hooks then one of them is bound to hook up. I don't think it would be very sporting though, probably best to cut off the hooks.

I've seen them used in Greece.

as the lads say, put a load of groundbait around the cage (bread when i saw it used), and cast it out.

Loads of small fish come in and start picking at the groundbait on the surface making a big disturbance, and then out of the blue a big fish comes and smashes into them. the flying hooks are obviously to capture the beast!!

Great idea, not very sporting though!

we use this rig in greece.you put a load of bread on the spring and rap around the few hooks.on the longer snood put a fish bait,
you targeting mullet but actually because as alby said a lot of small fishes attacking the bread they attract bigger fish that you hope to take your fish bait.

thanks for all the replies thought it might be good for mullet using bread or smaller species using fish bait off a pier
as alby and Dave said its not very sporting with all the hooks
got it with some rigs i got as test samples from china before i put in a order for 500
might give it a go for mullet the way mickmick suggested
